Complexity fall late versus fnatic, what went wrong?
Complexity raised some eyebrows at BLAST in Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski's debut when they beat out NIP in their opening match, however, the team managed to win just one map in their next three matches and ultimately were relegated to the Showdown competition. Now Complexity once again find themselves on the back foot after a close but unsuccessful opening match against fnatic, where they lost in overtime.
The mezii show
The biggest problem for Complexity was a certain British rifler, William "mezii" Merriman has handed off the mantle of IGL to new teammate Christopher "dexter" Nong and the change seemingly had an immediate impact as the British star dropped a monster 39 kill performance against the NA side. With such a dominant performance it is easy to see how the game was so close, decided by a handful of impactful rounds rather than one team outclassing the other.
Fine Margins
As mentioned it was a game of fine margins rather than complete dominance, with both teams performing at a similar level, it came down to the performances of individuals to sway the game in their sides' favor. Michael "Grim" Wince impressed with a server high seven opening kills, however, his good work in forcing advantages was something Complexity struggled to capitalize on. This is a familiar problem for the team and converting advantageous situations was an issue in Copenhagen as well.
floppy finding his feet
Amongst the disappointment, there has been a notable positive since the player break and that is the form of Ricky "floppy" Kemery. Once one of the brightest stars of the NA CS scene, since his return to the game he has played largely a supportive role on the squad but at BLAST, he showed glimpses of that star form. Once again against fnatic he showed the talent at his fingertips as he was instrumental in Complexity's fightback to force overtime.
What's next for Complexity?
The good news for Complexity is they are still in the tournament, and on top of that they don't have to worry about playing best of ones anymore. The bad news is they have been dealt a tricky draw in the losers bracket as they will face off against OG, who underwent a major reshuffle in the off-season and also lost in overtime in their first match, a 17-19 loss to 9INE.
