Valve updates CS2 payment scheme for in-game skin, content creators

Creators will now receive a per diem from Valve if their item is added to the game.

Yesterday Russian Counter-Strike 2 pundit and insider Maksim "Gabe Follower" Poletaev published updated code snippets from Counter-Strike 2 that appear to show Valve are updating their compensation model for in-game skins and items made by the community.

According to the leaks, it appears that Valve are aiming to pay creators a fixed amount per day if their items are included in the CS2 Armory, moving away from paying a percentage of each item purchase previously seen with Counter-Strike cases.

The Counter-Strike 2 Armory functions as the game's "battle pass", with players paying an upfront fee to purchase the pass to earn stars that can be used to redeem skins, cases, charms, and other in-game items. The Armory system is seemingly Valve's new preferred method for releasing creator items, likely spurring the company to revisit how they pay for approved in-game creations.

It is unknown whether this fixed per diem will represent a net positive for creators or if the new payment structure may lead to creators making less overall. Some have suggested this is part of a wider pivot away from cases in order to comply with EU regulations, but that remains to be seen.

+1 hopefully, as the article states, it is merely a change to ditch loot boxes and not to cut what they are paying.
