FaNg has his sights set on Legends

FaNg: "I definitely want to make Legends"

The Canadian rifler has clear aspirations for making the Legends stage.

Complexity has been underwhelming as of late. Following their impressive run at IEM Katowice where they narrowly missed out on the playoffs the North Americans have struggled to recapture that scintillating form as they recently crashed out in the group stages of ESL Challenger Melbourne. Despite the struggles, Justin "FaNg" Coakley and co. got off to a dream start for the Challengers stage of the BLAST.tv Paris Major with a win over GamerLegion and Ryan Friend of Dust2us got a chance to chat with the 21-year-old rifler in the aftermath of that victory.

Starting out against GamerLegion, the European lineup led by Kamil "siuhy" Szkaradek is one of the teams that Complexity perhaps would have preferred to play when it comes to the team list for the stacked Challengers stage. Storming out to a commanding 13-2 lead by halftime, Complexity was clearly prepared heading into the match, even if things got a bit dicey on the T-side.

We were preparing for Inferno, also Ancient, but we knew that Inferno was more likely. We feel pretty comfortable on the map, we know that they are comfortable, we just went over little prep things with what they like to do and how they like to play so we wanted it to translate into our game with how we wanted to play and I think you definitely saw it with how we disrupted their banana control a lot, just making sure we had numbers there and rotating our numbers constantly and making sure that we were playing with the edge. So yeah that led to a convincing CT half for us. Leading on T-side I think we got a little bit unfortunate with some of our trade kills, we were giving up a lot of early picks which definitely helped them a lot and made us struggle so when we eliminated that factor it definitely helped us resolve a lot of those issues and then we could close more rounds and it led to the win.

Complexity's resilience and resolve were certainly on display during the second half as GamerLegion closed the gap to within three rounds. Notoriously in the past, Complexity has failed to close out their massive leads and FaNg acknowledged the factors that resulted in that grim fate not reoccurring yet again today despite the screams of joy from their EU opponents.

We always take tac pauses. I don't think any of us hear anything realistically, I don't think any of us hear shit when it comes to screaming or anything like that so it is just that we are focused on ourselves. Tc does a good job of that too, making sure that we recognize our tac pauses and that people are composed. We can definitely be better at it, but it's getting there.

As for their next matchup, it is perhaps a team that Complexity would have wanted to avoid at this stage of the Major, G2. Despite being one of the heavy favorites for this stage and the Major in general, FaNg relishes the challenge.

It's going to be fun. That's it, it's going to be fun.

If Complexity are to conquer G2, that would put them on the brink of the Legends stage and even if they lose, the next phase remains well within their reach. For FaNg and the rest of the team, that next stage is the clear goal that they all have their eyes set on for now.

I definitely want to make Legends. I think that's my main goal personally but also a lot of my teammates and just getting wins here, but also having fun while playing and that confidence that we have gathered over practices, tournaments and constantly traveling. Just being with the team that much, we have been through a lot so actually translating that to the matches is nice and showing it already in our first game is a nice result.

We won't have to wait long to see if the hard work will continue to translate into results, as Complexity take to the server against G2 shortly.
