Liquid topples SK in Mykonos
This significant upset began by Team Liquid starting on the T-side of Inferno, their map pick., with a solid 4 round lead against SK Gaming. Big plays made by Josh “jdm64” Marzano and Jonathan “EliGe” Jablonowski, as well as winning the pistol round, are what really secured the first half for Liquid and lead to the half ending 9-6 in favor of the Americans.
Truly devastating to their first half success was losing the second pistol round after Nick “nitr0” Cannella secured a triple kill. Tide turning plays by Fernando “fer” Alvarenga and Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo are what really blew out the economy for Liquid for several rounds at a time, giving SK space to virtually tie up the scoreline towards the end of the game. The unwavering boys in blue, however, didn’t falter and ended up winning out 16-12 on their map choice.
SK Gaming continued to struggle going into Cobblestone, their map choice, as they began the match by losing a 2v4 in the pistol round to Peter “stanislaw” Jarguz and jdm64. Liquid, still riding the momentum from their first map win ended up closing out the first half with a more than solid 10-5 scoreline.
The second half of Cobblestone began with a three round lead for SK as they won the pistol and subsequent rounds with their weaponry advantage. SK’s momentum was then halted by EliGe on the first full buy round for Liquid. Just as was the case in the first map, SK was unable to keep pace with Liquid in the second half once the Americans got on a hot streak, ultimately ending the match with a clean 2-0 victory to put then in the Grand Finals in Mykonos.
