malbsMd secures win in G2 debut
It was a debut win for Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa as part of G2 at the Esports World Cup as his squad took down The MongolZ in the opening round. It was a tight 2-0 for G2 who were brought to the final round of both maps as they escaped with a 13-11, 16-13 series win.
The win will see G2 advance directly to the playoffs, while The MongolZ will have to battle it out in the grueling lower-bracket. The double-elimination format will see only one team advance from the lower bracket to make the playoffs.
malbsMd was not the only debut in the G2 squad as new in-game leader Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski showed off his ability as a caller and as a similar replacement to the outgoing Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen.
G2 started off Ancient with some solid defense as malbsMd got comfortable with his new position as the A-site anchor. The team struggled to make enough space from the Mongolian squad, fighting back before finally taking the lead towards the end of the map. G2 would win 13-11 in regulation, taking the series advantage.
Inferno was an even tougher challenge for G2 and malbsMd as the squad fell down early in the contest and had to fight back from a 4-7 deficit. G2 found their strength on the CT-side, but it wasn't enough to handle in regulation as they were pushed into overtime. With multiple gun rounds back to back, G2 were able to overwhelm The MongolZ and secured a 16-13 map win and a 2-0 series victory.
G2 are now headed to the playoffs while The MongolZ will need to fight back in the Lower Bracket.
