Favorites prevail in day one of NA Revival Cup
Day one of Complexity and Mythic League's NA Revival Cup concluded last night, seeing all four quarterfinal series conclude with the favorites all advancing into the semifinals. With that, NRG, Party Astronauts, M80, and Nouns are set to continue their runs for the $4k top prize tonight while the remainder of the teams were sent packing.
The first series of the day was a relatively one-sided affair for NRG in their series against BOSS. Starting on NRG's map pick of Inferno, Colby "Walco" Walsh's troops ended their T-side with a narrow 7-5 lead before posting a much more dominant CT-side to take the map 13-8. Moving onto BOSS' pick, Mirage, the opening half was once again a narrow victory for NRG as they won their CT-side 7-5. After switching sides, NRG maintained their lead with a strong T-side that saw the team take Mirage 13-7 to send BOSS out of the tournament.
The second series between Party Astronauts and Legacy ended up being the closest of the night, with the Americans taking the series 2-0 in the closest possible way. Map one, Mirage, began with Legacy on their T-side, posting a dominant 9-3 half to put PA on the back foot. However, PA were able to rally in the second half, returning the favor to Legacy to force the map into overtime. With this, PA seemingly had renewed confidence as Danny "cxzi" Strzelczyk led the charge for Party Astronauts to post a perfect overtime and take Mirage 16-12.
The next map in the series, Anubis, started with Party Astronauts taking the lead as they claimed a 8-4 lead on their CT-side thanks to another strong performance from cxzi. The star rifler would continue to perform well in the second half despite Legacy's best efforts to force a third map, starting their run by winning five out of the first six rounds of the half to tie Anubis up at 9-9. This would lead into a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading blows before Party Astronauts came out ahead in the 24th round to win Anubis 13-11 and avoid another overtime.
The next series began with M80 facing off against open qualifier hopefuls regain. As can be expected from one of North America's best squads, the plucky ESEA Advanced team was unable to give M80 too much trouble, with M80 starting the series off with a one-sided 13-6 win on Anubis punctuated by a dominant T-side. On Ancient, regain were able to provide a bit of opposition, leading to M80 only winning their T-side 7-5, however a dominant CT-side from M80 would send regain packing with another 13-6 win.
The final series of the day was between Nouns and Wildcard, with the latter team fielding Ian "motm" Hardy as a stand-in for Aran "Sonic" Groesbeek. With this stand-in situation, the team seemingly struggled on Inferno against Nouns, as IGL Carson "nosraC" O'Reilly led the charge for his team to win the T-side 8-4 before closing out the map 13-6.
Map two, Vertigo, started off similarly, with Wildcard again on the backfoot as Nouns ran over Wildcard's defense to claim an identical 8-4 T-side . Moving into the second half, Nouns looked set to take Vertigo easily as they won the first four rounds of their CT-side to claim match point. However, Wildcard did not intend on going quietly as they mounted a seven-round comeback to bring the scoreline to 11-12 with promising signs of forcing overtime and a third map. Unfortunately for Wildcard, it wasn't meant to be, as Nouns finally rallied to take Vertigo 13-11 and eliminate Wildcard.
With the quarterfinals concluded, the semifinals are set to start at 03:00PM with NRG taking on Party Astronauts, while Nouns will face M80 at 06:00PM.
