EG fall inches short of victory
Two successful comebacks somehow ended in defeat for Evil Geniuses this afternoon as they get sent to the last chance group after a devastating 0-2 loss against MOUZ. Each time Evil Geniuses appeared to be out of the game they fought their way back in, proving that they could handle themselves on the big stage. For a team continuing to grow and learn at the international level, these losses are tough breaks.
The vetoes started out with each team attempting to force the other to ban Anubis, a shared permaban. Evil Geniuses got to select Ancient, one of their favorite maps. After the first half however, you could be forgiven for thinking this was MOUZ's pick.
The European squad looks confident and competent as they cruised their way to a 10-5 half before widening the gap to 13-5 after the second half pistol.
Evil Geniuses would not be put down so easily as they mounted a ridiculous comeback to take the lead 15-14 heading into the final round, just to lose to a rush and eventually lose every round in overtime to go down 19-15 on their pick.
It was a nice sign to see Evil Geniuses showing their quality, but frustrating as they end so quickly. Now, they had a second chance on Inferno. This was a map MOUZ have looked strong on and like Ancient, showed up strong in the first half as EG looked like they were scrambling for answers. However, like Ancient, EG found those answers in the second half as they once again rallied and even tied up the score 13-13.
With all the momentum on EG's side and the chance to close it out against a weaker buy, an awkward round allowed MOUZ to comeback and crush any possibility of an upset by winning the map 16-13 and series 2-0.
Evil Geniuses, now sent to the lower bracket, will face off against the plucky Australians of Rooster at 06:30AM on Saturday.
