Envy, Rugratz, Infinity, Faint to ESL One Rio qualifier semifinals
The first day of the first qualifier for ESL One Rio 2020 has come to a close, seeing four teams left in the hunt for two spots in the Closed Qualifier.
Things got off to an unexpected start, as Rap Gang lost in overtime to Advanced side Neko Paradise. Russian Street Party, Prospects, ETHEREAL, twentythrees, Fine Wine, CLG Red, and ANEW also suffered losses in the second round.
The third round of play most notably saw LiViD get taken out by the recently-signed GameAgents roster. Additionally, New England Whalers take down Marcos "tacitus" Castilho's Polar Ace side, Faint handily defeat Clarity, and Monstars brutalize Savage.
Upsets abounded in round four, as Danny "cxzi" Strzelczyk's Faint continued to hit hard, demolishing a New England Whalers side that featured Danny "roca" Gustaferri instead of Marc-Andre "NiSMO" Tayar. Interestingly, the team's roster for the event also contained Swedish player Linus "Limpone" Wecksell, who most recently was a coach/analyst for Singularity.
Fledgling MDL side Asuna's Anime Aimers also upset Matthew "WARDELL" Yu's Just For Fun side, even without the presence of Tyson "TenZ" Ngo. Yet another surprising result saw Monstars defeated by Spencer "Hiko" Martin and Ze Pug Godz.
The final round to be played out yesterday saw a spectrum of results, as Rugratz and Faint battered their opposition in the forms of ex-iNTACT and Station7, respectively.
In somewhat closer affairs, Envy defeated Asuna's Anime Animers:
And Ze Pug Godz were outmatched by the new-look Infinity squad:
