Liquid remove mithR, announce interim coach
Liquid announced today that they would be parting ways with Danish coach Torbjørn "mithR" Nyborg. mithR was the Liquid head coach for just under a year.
mithR had a 31-23 record during his time with Liquid and guided the squad to a quarterfinal finish at the Perfect World Shanghai Major in December. However, as sources told our sister website Dust2.dk, mithR's removal was also motivated by financial aspects. The organization is currently operating with a "reduced financial framework", according to Dust2.dk.
The Dane also released a statement after his removal was announced, in which he spoke fondly of the 2024 season and lamented how 2025 panned out.
2025 did not go as we wanted it to. I am incredibly disappointed and sad that it turned out this way, but I will reflect and learn from this - as I always have - and improve for my next team.
I found myself trying to adapt to become something I am not and all the things that I loved about last season were slowly fading away. At the end of the day I believe this is the best decision for both parties and even though I would have preferred to stay on board and fight through the tough times together, I fully understand their decision and were I in their shoes then I would probably have done the same.
In light of the head coach opening, Liquid have promoted Data Analyst Jay "DeMars DeRover" Li to interim head coach. DeMars DeRover has been in that role since his signing in May of 2023. The American will serve in this role while Liquid searches for a full-time head coach.
This change also comes at a time when Liquid are rumored to be changing their IGL. Kamil "siuhy" Szkaradek, most recently the captain of MOUZ, has been linked with a move to Liquid to replace Justin "jks" Savage and allow Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken to step down from in-game leadership.
