Vorborg: "I'm determined to stay with EG, as long as they will have me"
Evil Geniuses have bowed out of IEM Dallas early, after a close 19-17 opening loss to FaZe and now a 0-2 loss to fellow North American side Complexity. The unfortunate showing for Evil Geniuses is merely the next one in a long line of poor results for the squad throughout 2023, who have only notched a single BO3 win on LAN since the beginning of the year.
With the first half of 2023 now concluded for Evil Geniuses, head coach Daniel "Vorborg" Vorborg spoke with Dust2.us' Jeffrey "Mnmzzz" Moore regarding what went wrong during the match versus Complexity, the team's struggles, and what the future may hold for EG.

Looking at your result on your pick of Anubis, losing 16-2, what do you think went wrong in the planning for that pick?
I think we were in several fairly good situations where, and I'll have to go and rewatch it, it felt like we lost some fights that we usually win. Maybe we had a little bit of, they were B executing and hitting B a lot on a timing that we maybe haven't encountered too much in practice, so we had to do a little adjustment; I think we tried but, again, to me it came down to key duels that we lost almost every single one of those in this game, and then it's hard to win rounds in Counter-Strike.
You've brought refrezh into the project, and he's been working with the team for a while now, but remotely from Denmark. How long has refrezh been in the country now, and what has it been like working in person with him?
He only just arrived here in Dallas two or three days ago, but I mean we were in Europe for two and a half weeks-ish, so we had that low ping environment for two and a half weeks and that's the good prep we've had for this tournament. I think he's been adding a lot of good stuff to the team, he's bringing that veteran presence, he has a lot of ideas, he's able to change how we view a lot of different situations. We've been trying to incorporate that into our game, it has helped us a lot, but obviously, we didn't show it in this tournament.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but with the player break coming up soon, and the season not going according to plan for Evil Geniuses at all, what does the team do now to recover and find their footing?
A lot of evaluation, I think EG management will also have some evaluation. We'll start out now by evaluating since refrezh joined and see what we need to change and what we need to keep doing. It's been a relatively brief period with refrezh, and valens also said this publicly that every player break we're evaluating the roster and also my position as a coach, so, of course, we'll have to see if it's the same six you see after the break.
With the slew of coaching staff available for Evil Geniuses, does that mean there is potentially a future where we don't see you after the player break?
I mean, you'll have to ask valens that (laughs). I would love to stay with EG. I feel like I'm honestly so disappointed in myself that I haven't been able to do more with the chance I've been given here in EG. I definitely feel like I have unfinished business. Even if there's other opportunities out there, I'm pretty determined to stay with EG, as long as they will have me of course, because this is beneath me and beneath EG. I want nothing more than to prove myself and prove that I can have success here in EG.
