Brazilians (and yay) and Singularity still in the hunt for ESL One Cologne Closed Qualifier
The first day of the second qualifier for ESL One Cologne 2019 has concluded, seeing a trio of Brazilian teams and Singularity through to the top positions.
The first team through to tomorrow was INTZ, who through four rounds of the bracket only yielded eleven total rounds to their opponents. This despite the fact that the Brazilian team were fielding former compLexity member Jaccob "yay" Whiteaker in place of Marcelo "chelo" Cespedes, who is currently in Brazil due to personal problems.
yay and INTZ ran over their competition throughout the night, culminating with a big performance by the American against the newly-signed Front squad. Neither the excitement of a new organization, nor Cameron "skelly" Thomson in the coach role were much help for the new MDL team.
Next up was FURIA against Variance — another rookie MDL squad, with Variance coming off defeating oNe in the previous round of play. With the recently teamless Gabe "Spongey" Greiner playing in place of Stoyno "neska" Atanasov, Variance shocked the DreamHack Open Rio runners-up by taking the first half 9-6. However, despite the best efforts of Ezekiel "KmZ" Hughes, the North American team were no match for the Brazilians in the second half, as Andrei "arT" Piovezan led his team to ten straight rounds to advance.
Singularity looked poised to take their match against iNTACT handily, ending the first half up 10-5. Rafael "clone" Singer kept his team in the game, with the score narrowing to 13-11 at one point, but eventually the MDL team were triumphant, with in-game leader Alan "Shakezullah" Hardeman putting up solid numbers against his former organization.
The final match of the night saw ESL Pro League finalists Luminosity face off against Party Astronauts, in what would have been an MDL match only a month or so ago. Gabriel "NEKIZ" Schenato and Ben "ben1337" Smith topped the scoreboard for their respective teams, but ultimately the Brazilians came out on top thanks to a stronger CT-side.
The results mean that the following matches will determine which two teams will advance to the ESL One Cologne Closed Qualifier, joining ATK and Bad News Bears:
INTZ | vs. | Singularity | 6 PM EDT |
FURIA | vs. | Luminosity | 9 PM EDT |
