Into the Breach to shut down operations as a result of CEO stealing money
UK organization Into the Breach is shutting down its esports operations, the org announced on January 27th, shocking the CS2 community.
Into the Breach found out that an individual entrusted with all the money and monetary decisions was "embezzling funds" for personal use. While Into the Breach didn't directly cite the CEO Sam "SlayTheMinotaur" Macedonio in its official statement, Mr. Macedonio admitted to malpractice and said he'll accept all the legal consequences.
"Unfortunately, I, the CEO, was acting as two people – one trying to match their efforts and another a destructive, alcoholic narcissist hellbent on self-immolation," Mr. Macedonio wrote on X as a response to Into the Breach's announcement.
"I think everyone whose met me has likely seen one of these two sides, with the former able to convince everyone around me I was a sensible person, acting responsibly and not betraying their trust, while the later disappears in fiendish pursuit of dopamine and self-harm. The ultimate caricature which embodies the worst of people and this industry. "
Mr. Macedonio's actions as the acting CEO of Into the Breach left the organization in an unsustainable position to keep operating and they're forced to shut down. The organization will work to support the players, staff, and partners during the process.
The news of Into the Breach shutting down is a massive letdown especially to the UK community as few organizations are investing in CS2 there. Into the Breach peaked at the BLAST.tv Paris Major in 2023, when they surprised just about everyone and advanced to the playoffs.
Into the Breach's star Owen "smooya" Butterfield commented on the news with his characteristic humor, while former IGL Thomas "Thomas" Utting accused Mr. Macedonio of trying to "scam" the players from the start.
As a result of Into the Breach shutting down, all members of their lineup are now free agents:
