WolfY on joining Marsborne: "I was actually planning on going back to Europe"
Despite being on just the beginning of their journey, Marsborne has quickly made the case to be considered one of the rising stars in the NA scene.
The team, which features veterans such as Ian "motm" Hardy and Adam "WolfY" Andersson, seemingly came out of nowhere earlier this year but were able to bring together the right pieces in their first foray into esports.
Dust2.us' Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey "Mnmzzz" Moore caught up with WolfY on the first day of Fragadelphia x Block 2025 and discussed how the team came together, WolfY's choice to become an IGL, and more.

Marsborne formed out of the ashes of Undone with your teammate motm coming from that squad as well as chop, but you came into this fresh off of Party Astronauts. How did you find your way into this Marsborne roster?
So, it's funny because I was actually not planning to continue in North America. I was actually planning to go back to Europe and just competing over there.
After Party Astronauts I kind of felt like I was done with the scene just because there are lesser opportunities whether we like it or not. I was just doing stuff outside of the game but basically I spoke a little bit to chop before he messaged me and asked me if I was interested in playing and I said no, not really, it depends.
And then I was approached by Lucid, who's our head coach, telling me there's a possibility for a North American project that will actually have funding and it's a team that we can build and do like the way we want to. I've always wanted to work with him, briefly we did on Party Astronauts, but we never really were officially together under the same organization.
He approached me with it, gave me the idea, and I obviously wanted to work with him. I was going to step into an IGL role, which is something I wanted to give a shot as I've wanted to do and have done in the past. So, we just basically found our way in out of randomness, to be honest, because it wasn't planned at all. I didn't even have a PC when he messaged me, it was just funny and now here we are, doing the best we can.
You mentioned your decision to become an IGL of this Marsborne project. Why now? Why become an IGL at this stage of your career?
Me being IGL was just more me kind of wanting to do it because I have the personality traits for it and I've always been interested in it. And also, I have played with some pretty good in-game leaders like birdfromsky and maNkz.
I have played with people in the European scene and learned a lot. And other teammates have given me a lot of knowledge, and I feel like in-game leader right now is a very valuable role, we lack IGL in both Europe and North America, but especially in North America.
I just felt if we were going to do anything in North America, I wanted to really use the experience that I've gained and I wanted to play a CS that I believe in, a CS that Lucid believes in. I felt like if I was going to stay here and do any type of project like this, I needed to become the in-game leader.
You said this opportunity to join Marsborne sort of overruled your interest in returning to Europe. Does that help explain the level of your confidence in this project? Do you view the potential of this project to be so great that you opted out not to go to Europe despite you being on fairly successful teams like ECSTATIC in the European scene?
I would say so. Every American has some type of patriotism and I've always had that toward the country and I've always wanted to do something great.
I don't feel like I scratched that itch in Party Astronauts, I don't feel like I did that on M80 really. There's still a part of me that wants to go from nothing to something with a North American roster.
Of course I have confidence in myself, but working alongside people that I enjoy working with and that kind of see things the way I do, like Lucid, who's also very good at what he does, gives me more confidence in actually committing to the project and doing it.
I'm very fortunate to have people around me in Marsborne like the owners and Matt, our GM. I'm very happy that this happened and that I took the opportunity. It's been good so far.
To be honest, this Marsborne organization really came out of nowhere, it sort of popped out of the ground one day without much fanfare. What can you tell me about the owners of this Marsborne organization, like where they really came from? We know they're involved in the film and special effects industry, but other than that it's sort of a blank slate for the fans and even the journalists of the NA scene.
At first I had no idea about it either, I kind of had a hard time understanding it. I was like, what is it you guys really do?
Basically, it's a family business what they're doing. They're brothers and they worked in VFX, they have been Counter-Strike players for the longest times, and played back in the day in 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, all that.
Matt, Marsborne's GM, actually works for them and he's always wanted to do something within esports and these guys are familiar with it. They wanted to create a project, something different for themselves, and I guess to some degree go back to the nostalgic days in terms of gaming and everything.
They're just your average dudes and they're really cool. We have a pretty good relationship with them and we talk to them a lot. At the beginning, we had some meetings because when I heard it I was like 'ah, this is it, just another talks'. In esports there's a lot of talks and nothing really happens, but like I said, I still have a hard time believing and yet here I am, we're at Frag playing. I'm glad it happened, they're good guys.
