nicx: "I could always be doing better, that's just my mentality going forward"
Complexity's new lineup with Nick 'nicx' Lee and Danny "cxzi" Strzelczyk in place of Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski and Ricky "floppy" Kemery didn't exactly let fans excited as they only won maps against Imperial Valkyries in their first three LANs in Europe.
However, that was somewhat expected due to losing EliGE and bringing on two tier-two players from North America. Dust2.us' Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey "Mnmzzz" Moore interviewed nicx, who is attending Fragadelphia x Block 2025 to see some of his old teammates while Complexity take a break, and asked about his adaptation into tier-one, what went wrong in their first events, and what are they doing to improve their results coming forward.
The full interview can be found below on YouTube, with key snippets underneath.
What are the big takeaways from your time at the start of the year that you guys are focusing on now, to try to have a better showing in the second quarter of the year?
I mean, obviously the results weren't good. We did have a very hard schedule, but at the end of the day, there were maps we should have won that we didn't.
It doesn't really matter the level of team we're playing, we were still playing good enough that we could have beaten these teams and we should have beaten some of these teams.
All we can take out of it now is what we can learn from it. We have already reviewed all the games, but there's still lessons to be learned in those, and the next time we play at an international LAN, it will be a much smoother experience for us.
For you personally, having made that step up from tier-two North American scene into the tier-one scene, how do you feel about your performance as a player and your transition taking the next step in your career?
It depends, it kind of changes from day to day. I feel sometimes I'm doing okay and then sometimes there's so much more that I could be doing. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how good I'm doing because I could always really be doing more.
I feel that's the approach I'm going to try and take moving forward. It really doesn't matter if I'm doing well, I could always be doing better, that's just my mentality going forward.
Now you have the chance to work with some very experienced names, whether it's JT or T.c., people who have seen everything, done everything, and who have been in tier-one for years now. Focusing on JT, what's it like working with him compared to some of the other IGLs you have worked with in the past?
There's a lot more of a defined system, we know what we're going to do, or when we go into practice, he knows the system that he wants to bring, and then he brings the system.
Sometimes when I'm playing on teams, we're kind of coming up with the system together and we're figuring things out as we go. We're doing that with Complexity as time goes on, but JT has a system and he knows what he likes, and we're also liking the system as well.
So, it [comes down to] implementing things like that and he's also super experienced. If you have questions about the game, he really doesn't need to think about it. He's been around and experienced those things, and he just has the answer for you.
The same goes for T.c as well. T.c and JT, they kind of fit together in putting in that system.
With Complexity now having a bit of a break before they head into the second quarter of the year, what are the squad's priorities to make sure we have a stronger showing when we're back on LAN?
Figuring things out. I feel that on an individual level it's kind of what we're doing right now. We're changing around some spots, we're kind of just going back and looking at what were the things that went wrong at those previous things, and we're just working on fixing those.
[There were] some things that we were doing really well, and things that we weren't doing well and it was really bad. So, we thought we'd switch some things up, that's what we're going into for the next event. We have Bucharest coming up and we're looking forward to it.
