Envy raised lots of question marks when they departed CS:GO in 2021

moses reacts to Envy's latest CS tease: "Don't leave in a year or two, be here for the long haul"

The Bald Eagle had some advice for Envy's owner hastr0.

Envy's owner Mike "hastr0" Rufail announced on April 15th that the organization wants to get back into Counter-Strike esports. The announcement got loads of impressions, but one comment in particular made by caster Jason "moses" O'Toole stood out from the pack.

"If you do [return to CS] please just be smart about it, don't burn yourself and leave in a year or two cursing the scene as unsustainable," moses wrote to hastr0 on X. "Be here for the long haul <3".

moses referred to hastr0's own words when Envy put its CS:GO division on hold in 2021, citing operational burdens in an exchange of tweets with Jarek ""DeKay" Lewis, who was an esports insider at the time.

Here's what hastr0 told DeKay in 2021 when Envy left the scene:

Actually, operating almost any CS team is lighting money on fire right now. There are no underlying assets that support the spend where top player salaries are. I’m sure you could run a fantastic team if you had unlimited cash, but what happens when you can’t cover your cost?

Envy's decision to abandon CS:GO in early 2021 raised eyebrows at the time as the organization was one of the investors of the now-defunct Flashpoint league and had spent $2 million to be a part of the league in 2020.

Should Envy returns to CS, hastr0 will find a much different scenario as Valve has killed off all partnership leagues and is trying to keep the ecosystem as open as possible.

hastr0 reacquired the Envy brand in January, two years after the merge with OpTic. The organization is currently housing North American teams in VALORANT, Apex Legends and Marvel Rivals.
