Jonji exits Bad News Bears
After a crushing loss to oNe tonight, Jonathan "Jonji" Carey has announced his departure from Bad News Bears, ending his eight month involvement with the revived tag.
During his time with Bad News Bears, the organization-less team has enjoyed domestic success, with Bad News Bears recently winning Fragadelphia 15 and a number of ESEA and Mythic's Cash Cups. Despite this, Bad News Bears have failed to have an impact abroad, finishing in last place at both IEM Cologne 2021 and ESL Pro League Season 14.
The team also recently failed to qualify to BLAST Premier Spring Showdown following close losses to domestic rivals Extra Salt and Party Astronauts.
This recent string of mixed results seems to have come to a head tonight at DreamHack Open September, where Bad News Bears fell to oNe following a complete breakdown on Inferno that saw the team concede nine match points before dropping Inferno in overtime.
While this result is seemingly a catalyst for Jonji's departure, Dust2.us knows from sources close to Bad News Bears that the team environment had been degrading for some time and changes were being considered.
With Jonji out, Bad News Bears are now:
- Michael "Swisher" Schmid
- Gabe "Spongey" Greiner
- Alan "Shakezullah" Hardeman
- Paytyn "junior" Johnson
- Nathan "madcow" Retterath (Coach)
Unfortunately for Bad News Bears, the loss of Jonji will likely remove any chance of them qualifying to PGL Stockholm, as the team will need to field Nathan "madcow" Retterath in IEM Fall and take a 20% hit to points earned at the event. Despite the bad news, HLTV's Danish "Nohte" Allana confirmed with the team they plan to stay together and are looking for a new fifth.
