Complexity are down, but not yet out

Shock results in day one of IEM Sydney Qualifier

It's an early exit for one of the two invited teams.

It was an exhilarating night on Thursday with Complexity and Nouns being shocked by both M80 and Forsaken, two of North America's recently formed teams. M80 are no stranger to punching above their weight, with the organization putting together a well-oiled machine that has continued to impress in the domestic circuit.

In their matches last night, M80 were matched up against the ever-changing Nouns who are still in flux after replacing Bobby "stamina" Eitrem with their previous IGL David "cynic" Polster. However, cynic is no longer the leader of the team, handing that responsibility over to Carson "nosraC" O'Reilly.

In the first official match as a new squad, things did not go according to plan for Nouns as the Boston-based M80 took early control of the best-of-three and crushed their own pick of Anubis 16-8. While Nouns was on the back foot, M80 simply did not let up as they pushed the DAO-backed team to the brink on Mirage and came away with a 16-13 win, sending the team down to the Lower Final elimination match.

Complexity, facing off against the unsigned Forsaken project spearheaded by Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz, started off strong by taking their opponent's pick of Vertigo 16-13, but soon faced issues on their own pick of Nuke. Issues resulted in head coach Matt "warden" Dickens needing to step in for Gage "infinite" Green, but he stepped up admirably as he gave the team 14 kills, a 1.15 HLTV Rating, and a 55.6 ADR. His unexpected performance helped the team surprise Complexity 16-8 and tie up the series 1-1.

Ancient, however, is where everything went wrong for the Cowboys as they pulled ahead for a staggering 11-1 T-side lead, but this is where things went awry. Forsaken began their comeback on the CT-side and would continue on their offense as they overturned that deficit and took the lead 14-11 before closing out the match 16-12 to send Complexity down to meet Nouns.

With both Nouns and Complexity facing elimination, it would be Complexity that best utilized their top level experience by keeping a cool head and keeping a clear lead in the match against Nouns by stealing their pick of Ancient 16-13 and then calmly closing it out on Anubis, 16-12. Now, Complexity have earned themselves a rematch against Forsaken, with the Cowboys hoping to get revenge after an early misstep.

Speaking of Forsaken, they were sent into the Lower Bracket match against Complexity after an incredibly close match featuring M80. Both teams traded map picks, bringing each map to the near full 30 rounds after M80 won Forsaken’s pick of Overpass 16-14 and Forsaken won Vertigo 16-13. The two sides were nearly inseparable as they battled intensely through the final map of Nuke, where M80 were able to once again squeeze out a 16-14 victory.
