SK trump C9 to advance to playoffs
The champions of ESL One Cologne first took on the Tarik “tarik” Celik-infused Cloud9 on Train, a great map for both teams. Cloud9 put up a respectable 9-6 CT half led by the new in-game leader tarik himself, but after winning the pistol and the following three rounds in the second half, completely fell apart. Fernando “fer” Alvarenga and Gabriel “FalleN” Toldeo picked apart Cloud9, and won out the rest of the half to take the map 16-13.
On SK’s pick Cobblestone, Cloud9 did manage to take the pistol and the following two rounds, but really struggled to string any rounds together on their CT side. Once again led by fer, SK dominated both sides of the map, easily taking this map 16-9, despite impressive performances by tarik, both on Cobble and Train.
This series between regional comrades really shows the freshness of the new C9 lineup. Historically Cloud9 plays very close with SK, but after the very recent additions of tarik and Will “RUSH” Wierzba, it was clear they were not fully prepared. It was also a good sign for SK in that even though they had just lost a series to North yesterday, they weren’t in the bin just yet.
SK will now face G2 Esports tomorrow in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the ESL Pro League S5 Finals semifinal.
