G2 tops Group D over Immortals
After taking down Fnatic in close fashion yesterday, Immortals found their way in the winners match to decide which team would exit Group D in first place. G2, who had taken down EnVyUs, looked prime to take down the major finalists, but the Brazilians wouldn’t go down without a fight.
The veto decisions by G2 in this series are quite interesting, as their usual perma-ban Mirage was instead floated to ban Train instead. This meant that Ricardo “boltz” Prass planned on exploiting this perceived weakness and picked Mirage. It seems that Dan “apEX” Madesclaire and Edouard “SmithZz” Dubourdeaux had come well prepared, as G2 rocked a 9-6 T half, and managed to close out Immortals’ pick 16-12.
The second map, Inferno, started off quite close, with the first half ending 8-7 in G2’s favor. However, due to some powerful play by Lucas “steel” Lopes, racking up 33 frags in regulation, Immortals put forth a strong T side and forced a third map.
The current #4 ranked team had a tough task ahead of them, as Overpass is known as one of G2’s best maps, and this map certainly showed their prowess on it. Only garnering 4 rounds on the CT side, Immortals attempted to create a comeback during the second half, but stellar play from Kenny “kennyS” Schrub put them down 16-10.
Immortals will now play Fnatic tomorrow in a best of 3 to determine the other team to advance past the group stage.
