JT: "If I get zero kills and we win the map, I’m happy"
In an interview right after Complexity's win over Imperial to avoid elimination by sending the veteran Brazilian squad, Johnny "JT" Theodosiou talked with Dust2.us' Ryan Friend about his thoughts going into the series, the recent history between both teams, the current form of the team regarding JT's calling and fragging abilities, and Ricky "floppy" Kemery's recent form.
The interview also glanced over the technical problems that plagued the Americas RMR, which didn't affect Complexity much due to the good relationship between all team members.
Johnny, absolutely incredible 2-0 win over Imperial. They have been your nemesis for quite a long time. Obviously, this is going to feel good now making it to the qualification stage for the major.
It feels really good, we always have close games against them but I think today we played really well, especially on the T-sides. I’m relieved that we got it through and now we can go into the qualification match tomorrow.
Walk me through that Overpass, because that was an incredibly important map, Imperial’s pick, you guys really went down on that first half. Coming back to that T-side calling, was there anything that you were looking to exploit out of Imperial, anything that you’ve known since you played that map against them so many times?
I think the biggest thing is we know that the previous times they have been stacking towards B a lot and the players on A were just playing very separately in general so we used the fact that we could get free entries on A. Besides that, whatever I felt was right at the moment I just went and I think at the start I got a good feel about what they were doing and we were able to close out the rounds.
Overpass has been one of the more decider maps that you’ve played in this matchup. Were you expecting them to pick that one first?
We were expecting them to take it, I think our coach said there was a good chance that they pick Overpass instead because we beat them on Inferno the last time so he was right.
When you had that T-side momentum, as we know Complexity can be a very emotional and very momentum-based team, heading into that T-side of Nuke, you guys were really excelling, did you feel and carry over that momentum from the successful T-side on Overpass?
We felt very confident coming into the second half because the previous map on our T-side we were just hitting our shots, but I think in general we get a lot of T-side rounds, and we are pretty comfortable on the T-side.
I was talking with your coach yesterday after your loss against paiN. Do you think that after the game you guys were able to talk and figure out what was going on?
Yeah, we reviewed lots of games and saw what was going on, people playing scared or people not trading with each other or people just being a little slow on a call and stuff like that. So we just fixed a few things, looked at a few things that have been working for us, and make sure we do those more often.
Now you are 2-1, you have a plethora of opponents that you could potentially face, so you go anywhere from EG to Flamengo. Is there any opponent that you are hoping you could face in this next round to guarantee your qualification?
I don’t even know who’s left over, to be honest, I’m not really thinking about who we play next but whoever it is, we are just going to bring our A game and get to the next stage.
Tech-related issues have been a major focal point of this event. Has that been hard to overcome? Does it break your concentration or momentum at all?
Hasn’t been difficult to deal with, it’s been pretty terrible with all the tech issues and how long the games last but for us, we just use it as a joke, have fun with it and it is what it is, it’s out of our control so we just leave it alone and just continue playing normal.
Within the team, you guys seem like laid-back individuals, do you think that has helped you deal with all this stuff and all the rigmarole happening here?
Yeah, we are all good friends and we all enjoy each other so if we have to wait a one-hour tech pause we are going to be fine, is just a little boring but with each other has been fun.
Floppy has had an evolution as a player. He has now been anchoring a lot more difficult sites throughout the maps. Are you satisfied with the way that he’s putting up those numbers in the way that he’s been playing?
I think he has been playing well but I think he can play even better. My expectations for floppy and I think they are the same for himself is that he can be one of the best anchors maybe in the world. He’s been playing pretty well, recently, I hope he can keep it up.
Another focal point has been your own fragging ability. Sometimes you can be low in the scoreboard but other times like this last map you are up there with players like Grim. For you, how important is that as an IGL to have your own ability to frag and lead the team that way?
Honestly, I don’t care if I get any kills as long as we win, but it has been fun getting some kills in the last few games but it’s not always going to be like that. The roles I play are very selfless and doing other things that aren’t gonna allow me to get kills but I have been getting some kills and it’s been fun but honestly, if I get zero kills and we win the map, I’m happy.
You guys missed out on IEM Rio, Paris is the last Major of CS:GO. Do those storylines add pressure and does that feed into anything, are you looking for a little bit of revenge and getting one final sticker?
We definitely want to make the last Major, especially for hallzerk, he doesn’t have stickers, the rest of us have qualified for that one Major so it’s really big for hallzerk especially just to get some stickers for the last Major.
Have you been able to playtest CS2? Are there any thoughts you have so far about the game?
I haven’t played it much because we’ve been mostly preparing for the RMR, I’ve been trying to stay out of it, but the only thought I have is I hope they can fix the movement issues because the biggest thing in CS:GO is the movement, so I’m hoping they can fix that. Currently, the BHOPing and strafing and stuff like that doesn’t feel right.
Complexity went on to play MIBR in their final 2-1 matchup, which they won 2-0 to make the BLAST.tv Paris Major.
