CLG Red bow out of ESL Impact Katowice
After an opening loss to NAVI Javelins to start their run, CLG Red will be packing their bags early as they narrowly fell in their elimination match in Group B of ESL Impact Katowice at the hands of 9 Pandas Fearless.
The do-or-die series kicked off on the Panda's pick of Mirage, with the two squads trading streaks of rounds back and forth for much of the first half. CLG Red eventually found their footing on the defense, allowing them to snatch the remaining five rounds to carve out a 9-6 lead. A pistol round victory in the second half from 9 Pandas Fearless tied up the scoreline 9-9, and the game quickly returned to the back-and-forth nature of the first half. This time, however, it would be 9 Pandas Fearless to compose themselves, as they secured both the final four rounds and their map pick with a 16-13 scoreline.
Now one map from elimination, CLG Red looked to step up on their pick of Overpass, as they quickly took control on the offense off the back of a pistol round win. Although the first gun round would go the way of the Pandas, CLG Red remained in the driver's seat for much of the rest of the half to take a 9-6 lead. Although their second pistol round win was immediately countered with a force-buy victory from 9 Pandas Fearless, CLG Red rallied on the defense to secure their pick with a 16-10 scoreline.
The series would ultimately be decided on Vertigo, where CLG Red found an early lead on their CT-side, securing six of the first eight rounds. 9 Pandas Fearless were not dissuaded by this development, and although CLG Red would still go on to win the half, their lead was narrowed to only a single round with an 8-7 scoreline. A pistol round victory for CLG Red in the second half pushed their score to double digits, but the North American side quickly found themselves unable to deal with the Pandas' impenetrable defense. The Russian side put together a dominant streak of nine rounds in a row to secure the deciding map 16-10, sending CLG Red packing after the first day of play.
Only one North American team now remains at ESL Impact Katowice in the form of Saints, who will be looking to keep their run alive against Asian side HSG fe tomorrow at 04:30AM.
