Cloud9 advance to the playoffs

Cloud9 roll over SK, NiP beat EnVyUs, Astralis finish off The MongolZ

Cloud9, NiP, and Astralis picked up the final wins in Burbank, resulting in NiP, C9, and SK advancing to the playoffs.

SK took the first pistol round on Train with relative ease, thanks to Fernando “fer” Alvarenga securing A site for SK with three kills. Cloud9 answered immediately back with a force-buy, and went on to take three more rounds as Tyler “Skadoodle” Latham worked his way up to 14 kills with his AWP. SK managed to convert a two-on-three to take their second round, but once again pistols from Cloud9 shut SK down. The Brazilians replied with pistols and a scout of their own, running over Tarik “tarik” Celik and Jake “Stewie2k” Yip to attain their third round. Skadoodle wasn’t to be denied however, and the AWPer continued to demolish SK as he seized his 20th kill in ten rounds. Cloud9 took advantage of the momentum they had and won four more rounds, putting themselves up at a 10-3 scoreline. SK managed to bag the last two rounds for themselves, giving them a chance going into the second half.

SK’s hopes seemed to be crushed as Cloud9 snagged the second pistol round, but SK fought the same way Cloud9 did in the first half — a force-buy put them back in the running. The ensuing eco round from Cloud9 was mopped up by the Brazilians as well. The first gun round saw Cloud9 destroy SK’s A defense, but three kills from Ricardo “boltz” Prass in a two-on-four gave SK a chance to stay in the round; alas, tarik was able to win the one-on-two, giving Cloud9 the advantage once again. The North Americans were determined to close out the match, as despite a few close rounds, they easily shut out SK to take the map 16-7.

With this result, Cloud9 secured their spot in the playoffs and shut down the possibility of Astralis advancing. SK also held on to their playoffs spot, albeit in the third seed, as well.

NiP started off their game against EnVyUs with a 3-0 lead with some good kills by Fredrik "REZ" Sterner. REZ kept ramp on lockdown, and extended NiP's lead to five rounds. EnVyUs was unable to pick up a T side round until round seven, where Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom secured a triple kill to take down the Ninjas. Vincent "Happy" Schopenhauer and Christophe "SIXER" Xia allowed EnVy to gain ground on NiP, and despite a big round by Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund, the Frenchmen secured a 7-8 half finish.

Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg kicked off the second half with a big pistol play, which the NiP side converted into two more. In round 21, REZ pulled out an ace for his team, putting them onto 14 rounds, but EnVy finally fought back and secured a round in the second half. With ScreaM leading the way, the French team strung some rounds together. f0rest and GeT_RiGhT wanted to finish the game though, and even though the latter secured a quadruple kill, ScreaM held on by a thread. It was all for naught, as NiP finished off Nuke 16-11 on a pistol buy.

With this win, NiP will advance to the playoffs in the first seed, going directly to the semi-finals, while EnVyUs fall short and will exit the tournament in the 5th seed.

The MongolZ began their campaign against Astralis with the standard 3-0 lead. Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen quickly erased the deficit however, and Astralis eventually took the lead. Temuulen "Zilkenberg" Battulga managed to stop the Astralis train, but only for a moment, as The MongolZ were reset the following round. Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye then went on to lead his fellow Danes to extend their lead to five rounds. Astralis then finished out the first half 11-4.

After Astralis took the first three rounds of the second half, The MongolZ won the first gun round in their comeback attempt. In the end, the Asian team couldn't do anything against the Danes, and dupreeh put the final nail in the coffin for a 16-6 victory.

The MongolZ will exit IEM Oakland in last place with zero map victories, as many expected of them. Astralis did all they could, but with Cloud9 beating SK, they will exit IEM Oakland in the group stage despite having a positive record.
