Bravado stunned by cantwinalan; other favorites cruise in MDL playoffs
The quarterfinal matchups for MDL Season 29 have concluded, seeing Vireo.pro, Swole Patrol, Singularity, and cantwinalan advance to the semifinals. The four teams will fight for three spots at the MDL Global Challenge, while the fourth place team will take home $2,500 for their efforts over the season.
The day began with Vireo.pro picking up a 2-0 win over Mythic on Dust2 (16-5) and Mirage (16-9), becoming the first team to cement themselves a spot in the semifinals.
The series started off on Mythic's pick of Dust2, where the stream team were immediately put on the back foot as Josh "PwnAlone" Pigue led the way for Vireo.pro to a 7-0 lead. Mythic managed to reply back with a four round streak of their own, but were unable to maintain a steady footing and Vireo.pro managed to snag the remaining rounds for a dominant 11-4 halftime scoreline.
A win in the second half pistol round all but cemeted the map victory for Vireo.pro, and after resetting Mythic's economy on round 3, PwnAlone and co. quickly took the series to their own pick of Mirage.
Mythic secured their first pistol round win to kick off Mirage, moving up to a 2-0 scoreline. Once again the streamers found themselves on the back foot as Vireo.pro regained the lead 6-2, but managed to keep the score mostly even by snagging five of the ensuing six rounds to tie up the score 7-7. It was Vireo.pro who edged out the lead in the end with a 8-7 scoreline as they transitioned to their CT side.
Much like on Dust2, Vireo.pro picked up the second pistol round win, and again reset Mythic's economy after the stream team took back two rounds. With Mythic's economy broken once again, Vireo.pro cruised to a 16-9 finish by taking the remaining six rounds straight.
The second series of the day saw Swole Patrol dominate Old Guys Club 2-0 on Inferno (16-5) and Nuke (16-11). A stand-out performance by Edgar "MarKE"Jimenez on Inferno combined with Brandon "Ace" Winn's AWPing on Nuke ensured Swole Patrol their own spot in the semifinals. Notably, Ian "motm" Hardy occupied the coach slot for Swole Patrol during their matches today as he is still a part of the team's ESEA roster.
Inferno saw the opening rounds of the matchup traded back and forth between the two sides, with Swole Patrol eventually coming out on top on the fifth round to take control of the economy. The muscle men were able to extend their lead to 6-2 before Old Guys Club managed to snatch two rounds for themselves, but the remainder of the half went the way of MarKE and co. following a failed 1vs5 clutch attempt by Sean "seang@res" Gares, allowing for an 11-4 lead.
Old Guys Club gave themselves a fighting chance with a second half pistol win, but found themselves immediately reset by Swole Patrol. Little room was afforded to the self-proclaimed "best stream team in MDL" as Swole Patrol ensured a quick finish, taking the series to their own pick of Nuke after a dominant 16-5 victory.
It was Old Guys Club who pulled ahead on their CT side of Nuke, resetting Swole Patrol early on to work their way up to the infamous 7-1 scoreline. Swole Patrol rallied back with five rounds of their own to keep themselves competitive on the T side, but Old Guys club still won the half 9-6 by securing the final two rounds.
Swole Patrol's CT side was a completely different ball game as the first four rounds allowed for them to take the lead for the first time on Nuke, and although Old Guys Club tied the game back up the next round, a timely reset allowed for Swole Patrol to continue in their winning ways. Another quartet of rounds put Swole Patrol in touching distance of a map win at 14-10, and once again another timely economic reset against Old Guys Club made it easy for Ryan "freakazoid" Abadir's side as they took home the series 2-0 with a 16-11 map win.
Singularity and Spacestation duked it out in the third 2-0 series of the day, with Singularity emerging victorious on Cache (16-5) and Inferno (16-11] and seeing identical scorelines to the match between Swole Patrol and Old Guys Club.
Cache saw Ryan "ryann" Welsh pop off for Singularity, dropping a massive 34-9 scoreline over the course of the 21 round game. The map began with the two teams splitting the first six rounds evenly, keeping the series tied 3-3. Singularity didn't let the game stay close for long however, with ryann powering his team forward to a 9-3 lead. Spacestation stayed competitive as they snatched two of the final three rounds, but Cache seemed firmly in control of Singularity as they swapped over to their CT side.
ryann continued to take out the space debris as him and the rest of Singularity locked up the Spacestation, taking six straight rounds to close out the first map 16-5 in their favor.
Inferno was a close affair, although the mirrored scorelines at the start of the map continued as Singularity took the first trio of rounds and Spacestation tied up the game at 3-3. The back-and-forth didn't stop as Singularity once again regained the lead with four rounds in a row, with Spacestation following suite to yet again tie up the match 7-7. It was Singularity who edged out the lead at the end of the half, swapping over to their CT side with a narrow 8-7 scoreline.
Spacestation tied up the match with a second half pistol win, but found themselves immediately reset as Singularity regained control. It was Josh "oSee" Ohm who combined with ryann to help Singularity edge out the lead, taking two or three rounds for each singular round win that Spacestation managed to eek out. In the end, Singularity pulled firmly ahead to take the second map for themselves, bringing the series to a close 2-0.
The most surprising result of the night saw Bravado eliminated by cantwinalan in double overtime on both maps, with Sebastian "seb" Bucki and co. prevailing 22-19 on both Overpass and Nuke.
A strong 7-1 start on Overpass by cantwinalan put them firmly in control of their own map pick to start off the series, although Bravado were able to rally back with four rounds. The North Americans remained on top however, putting up a firm 10-5 half on their T side.
Bravado gave cantwinalan a taste of their own medicine in the second half, taking six rounds with cantwinalan managing only one for themselves. Despite a number of advantage situations for both teams, a back-and-forth brawl in the latter moments of the half saw the map go to overtime.
Again, advantage situations by Bravado were given up in overtime as cantwinalan took the first two rounds for themselves. Although the South Africans managed to mirror the score in the second half of overtime, they were unable to play to their usual standard and fell in the second overtime as cantwinalan pushed forward for a map 1 victory.
Nuke kicked off with Bravado mustering a 7-0 lead on their T side before cantwinalan put their first round on the board. In a surprising twist, Bravado were unable to edge out anymore rounds in the half, with cantwinalan locking out Dimitri "Detrony" Hadjipaschali's side for an 8-7 half.
cantwinalan's streak of rounds continued in the second half as they pulled ahead 12-7 with four rounds straight, but once Bravado's economy stabilized they were able to reduce the deficit to just a single round at 12-11. A loss to pistols by a broken cantwinalan roster left the South African team playing for overtime, which they managed to edge out after securing the final trio of rounds in regulation.
Much like on Overpass, cantwinalan took the first two rounds of overtime, but Bravado left themselves a fighting chance by snagging the final round of their CT side. A mirrored scoreline took the map into a second overtime, where cantwinalan shut out Bravado with a 3-0 CT half to put themselves on match point. Bravado attempted to fight back as the first round in the second half went their way, but cantwinalan prevailed with seb mollying the bomb in a 1vs1 against Detrony.
The final four teams will play in the semifinals tomorrow. The schedule for the two matches tomorrow is as follows:
