ECS Season 5 Week 5 Recap: eUnited stun Liquid and SK
The penultimate week of ECS Season 5 concluded Thursday. The week was filled with surprises as the challengers of eUnited rose from the very bottom of the league and are now in position to secure a spot in the finals.
NRG have already secured their spot at the finals and played their last two matches on Wednesday. Damian "daps" Steele and friends ended this online season of ECS dropping only one map to Cloud9.
Prior to Tuesday eUnited were sitting just 2-6 in the league. They started off defeating Liquid in both maps, and trading maps versus SK the following day. They then followed these coups with a 2-0 over the newly fully Danish OpTic side, with the Danes experiencing latency issues due to playing from their home country. These victories were much-needed for the rising North American squad, as they now sit at 7-7 and tied for third in the league.
In the final series of the week, Renegades and Rogue traded maps. Renegades are currently tied in the standings with Luminosity and eUnited, while Rogue lag slightly behind.
The updated standings for ECS Season 5 can be found below:
Team | Record | RD | Points |
NRG | 17-1 | +101 | 51 |
Cloud9 | 11-5 | +51 | 33 |
Luminosity | 7-7 | +18 | 21 |
eUnited | 7-7 | +3 | 21 |
Renegades | 7-9 | -45 | 21 |
Liquid | 6-6 | +10 | 18 |
Rogue | 6-6 | -19 | 18 |
SK | 5-7 | +11 | 15 |
compLexity | 3-11 | -65 | 9 |
OpTic | 3-13 | -66 | 9 |
With one week of regular season play to go, OpTic and compLexity find themselves sitting at the bottom of the barrel, with it being highly unlikely that the Danes will climb out. A poor placing in the league will only fuel speculation that they intend to return to their home country permanently.
As for compLexity, they have more wiggle room than the Danes due to having played less matches so far. However, their situation will be complicated by their recent roster change — due to ECS's new transfer rules, they will only be able to use one of Shahzeeb "ShahZaM" Khan and Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz.
