Elevate top Fragadelphia Kansas City
This weekend, ESL Challenger League squad Elevate topped Fragadelphia Kansas City, taking home $,3000 after besting a number of mixteams featuring ECL and ESEA Advanced talent. The event, which was Fragadelphia's fourth event this year, saw a strong turnout of 20 teams head out to the LEVELUP Arena in Kansas City.
The group stage at the weekend event was a return to Fragadelphia's normal format, with the 20 teams in attendance sorted into five best-of-three GSL groups. In the group stage, there were few surprises as the favorites made it out without too much trouble. Elevate in particular found smooth sailing in the group stage as they only lost ten rounds over the course of four maps, besting weplay4hugs and Parkers Money Crew handily.
Moving into playoffs, the opposition began to step up for Elevate after dispatching LOCK IN in the quaterfinals. Their semifinal series against Austin "Austin" Meadows' WICKED went the distance as the the stream team made both maps competitive, with both Anubis and Mirage being 13-9 affairs.
On the other side of the bracket, the other finalists, Locke's Kittens, played an extremely close semifinal series against awesome gaming academy. The three-map series initially started with Locke's Kittens taking Dust2 22-19 in overtime before awesome gaming academy claimed Mirage 13-11. This set the stage for the final map, Ancient, which saw Locke's Kittens ultimately prevail with a 13-9 scoreline. The series was punctuated by a colossal effort from Anthony "CLASIA" Kearney, who kept his team in the running by posting a 1.42 rating over the three maps.
With the finals locked in, Elevate faced surprisingly tough opposition from their mixteam opponents on Dust2, as the map went the full distance requiring Elevate to stop a rally from Locke's Kittens to take it 13-11. Moving onto Ancient, the map proved to be equally arduous for Elevate, as they spent their T-side on the backfoot, losing it 4-8 before switching sides. While Elevate finally found their form on the CT-side, this time it was Locke's Kittens' time to rally as the squad came back from at an 10-11 scoreline to take the map 13-11 and force the series onto a third map.
This third map, Mirage, unfortunately failed to live up to the billing of the previous two maps, as Deni "dea" Ediev put on a clinic as he left his team to a 7-5 lead on the T-side before Elevate posted a perfect CT-side to win the map, series, and event with a 13-7 scoreline.
