North America to have eight teams at Americas RMR
North America will see eight teams enter the Americas RMR compared to the seven previously thought. With FURIA earning the highest ranking in the region as of December 18th, the common thought was that South America would have earned eight spots to the RMR while North Amercia would have seven. This is due to the Valve rule which decides how invitations to the RMR would be decided if they could not be evenly split;
If a region must be subdivided to accommodate ping of participating teams (e.g., AMER -> NA and SA), RMR invitations will be split evenly among the regions. If invitations cannot be evenly split, the remaining invitation(s) will be granted to the subdivided qualifier featuring the team with the highest Regional Standing.
With the release of the 2024 PGL Copenhagen Major RMR Closed Qualifier rulebook, it was revealed that North America will have eight teams qualify to the regional RMR event while South America will only have seven.
One potential explanation is the interpretation of "remaining invitations" within the rule and how that affects which team would be considered the one with the highest Regional Standing. If we consider that FURIA has already been invited to the Americas RMR due to their Top 16 placing at the BLAST.tv Paris Major, then its possible Valve did not believe for them to be considered as part of the potential "remaining invitations". This would lead to the 2nd place team in the Regional Standing, Complexity, being the highest ranked and therefor giving North America the subregional advantage.
Dust2.us has reached out to PGL for further explanation regarding the subregional distribution of spots for the upcoming Americas RMR but has not heard back by the time of publication.
