Cooper- and Ze Pug Godz breezed through the qualifier in their first outing as a new team

Kinship, oNe, Ze Pug Godz, Yeah advance to DreamHack Open Summer 2020 Closed Qualifier

Kinship upset two MDL squads on their way to the Closed Qualifier.

The DreamHack Open Summer 2020 Open Qualifier has come to a close, seeing the 98 teams signed up reduced to just four as Kinship, oNe, Ze Pug Godz, and Yeah have claimed spots in the Closed Qualifier alongside Chaos, New England Whalers, Recon 5, and Triumph. Ze Pug Godz played this qualifier with an entirely different roster from their last outing, utilizing Bradley "ANDROID" Fodor, Edgar "MarKE" Maldonado, Jordan "Zellsis" Montemurro, Gage "Infinite" Green, and Austin "Cooper-" Abadir. Additionally, former Kinship player "VEIN" coached the team during the qualifier.

The first three rounds of the bracket were settled as expected, with a number of MDL and Advanced sides making their way through without much trouble. In the fourth round the first notable upsets took place as Kinship secured a close 19-16 win on Mirage against ex-Polar Ace. Drove Here From Cali also netted an upset, taking down AA 16-14 on Dust2, thanks in part to strong performances from Brandon "BRANTED" Ballard and  Alvin "EXIGE" Hu.

Swedish Canadians also ended RBG's run in round four, besting the top Advanced side 16-12 on Vertigo.

Round four also saw ex-Morning Light's run ended by Yeah, with the Brazilian side taking them down 19-17 on Dust2. ex-Morning Light's roster during this qualifier saw Chris  "riku" Piasecki and Nick "alter" Jackson play in place of Marc-Andre "NiSMO" Tayar and Chad "Oderus" Miller.

Moving into the round of eight, Ze Pug Godz were the first squad to claim a Closed Qualifier berth, making quick work of Drove Here from Cali, battering the team 16-5 on Dust2 before finishing the series with an equally one-sided 16-6 win on Nuke.

The Kinship versus Levitate series started off with a strong showing from the MDL roster as Levitate outplayed Kinship to win their Nuke CT-side 10-5 before quickly closing the map out 16-8. After being shut down on Nuke, Kinship rebounded quickly on Mirage, playing a close opening half before exploding in the last four rounds to win their CT-side 9-6. The second half ended up being a back and forth battle between the two American squads as they consistently traded rounds with no team managing to entrench a significant lead. It came down to the thirtieth round as Kinship managed to pull away and take the map 16-14, keeping their Closed Qualifier dreams alive and advancing the series onto Overpass.

On Overpass, things were looking up for Levitate as the squad started Overpass off 8-1 before ending their CT-side up 9-6. Moving into the second half, what can only be described as a complete rout took place for Levitate. Kinship mounted a near perfect CT-side, only allowing Levitate one round before completing their upset, winning the map 16-10, and claiming a spot in the Closed Qualifier.

The final series of the day also went the distance, with Yeah taking a labored 2-1 victory over Warriors International. Beginning the series on Mirage, newest addition Michael "Swisher" Schmid led the way for his team as they ended their T-side up 9-6. After switching onto their T-side, Yeah had a minor comeback with the Brazilians winning five out of the first eight rounds to come within one round of Warriors International. Warriors International managed to rally after this, winning the next four rounds in a row to take their map pick and the lead in the series. On Inferno, Warriors International held strong on their CT-side, claiming six rounds to trail by three heading into their T-side. After a close first half, Yeah managed to dominate on their T-side, with 16-year-old Eduardo "dumau" Wolkmer putting in work for his team as Yeah only conceded two rounds to Warriors International before taking Inferno 16-8.

With the series tied up, neither team gave an inch on Train, battling to an 8-7 lead for Yeah on their T-side before Warriors International returned the favor, claiming an 8-7 T-side of their own to take the map into overtime. After a close three-map series, Warriors International ran out of steam in overtime, as they netted one round before Yeah took Train 19-16, claiming the last spot in the Closed Qualifier.
