USA one step away from playoffs
The Women's US team playing in Iași beat Hong Kong 2-0 in the very last series of the group stage, after falling earlier in the day against the Netherlands, however, this does not guarantee them a playoff spot just yet.
A postponed match between Brazil and Netherlands has also postponed the decision of the Group B playoff-bound teams.
The day didn't start off in the best shape for the USA, as the team lost 2-0 against the Netherlands in two 16-12 maps, where the Americans couldn't keep the lead from the first halves.
The win against Hong Kong came in very different from, as the ladies didn't give their opposition any chance on map one, getting the first and only 16-0 of the group stage. The second map was also dominated by the US, this time with a 16-5 win.
This win would be enough to advance to the playoffs, but the game between Netherlands and Brazil has been postponed with the Netherlands up 1-0 on maps, but Brazil up 2-0 on the second map. The game is postponed because a Brazilian player required medical treatment and went to the hospital. If Brazil manages to come back and win the series, there will be a three-way tie between the two countries and the USA.
If it comes down to a three-way tie, the tiebreaker hierarchy is as follows:
-
Head-to-head result;
-
Round score difference between the tied participants (23:21 > 23:22);
-
Number of round wins between the tied participants (24:22 > 23:21);
-
Overall round score difference (39:31 > 40:33);
-
Overall number of round wins (40:32 > 39:31).
This means that the USA has to wait until the end of the series to know if they advanced to playoffs. The series between Brazil and Netherlands has no restart date schedule, at the time of publication.
If Team USA advances, the roster will face either Australia or Argentina, the teams that have advanced in Group A.
