EliGE records worst-ever finish at Cologne
Complexity was eliminated this afternoon from IEM Cologne 2023, marking the second time in a row that the organization has finished last in the competition. After an overtime loss against fnatic on Wednesday, Complexity returned with the hope of taking down OG to get one more opportunity at qualification. However, the American squad was not able to overcome their weaknesses on Mirage and a slow T-side on Overpass punished them as they exited the competition in last place.
This is the second time in a row that this Complexity core have finished in last place at IEM Cologne as they had suffered losses against Spirit and Astralis in the previous iteration of the event. As for Complexity's recent addition Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski, this is his worst finish at the event where he finished as a winner in 2019 and was the runner-up in 2016, both times with Liquid, the latter of which being a Major.
EliGE has a long history of being at the competition, with his first entrance in 2016 when he played alongside Nick "nitr0" Cannella, Spencer "Hiko" Martin, Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyljev, and Josh "jdm64" Marzano. Of all his teammates, only s1mple remains an active Counter-Strike player.
When EliGE won the competition with Liquid in 2019 it was part of the organization's magical summer where they won DreamHack Masters Dallas, ESL Pro League Season 9, IEM Cologne, BLAST Pro Series: Los Angeles, and IEM Chicago as well as the Intel Grand Slam. Notably, Liquid were able to avoid their arch-nemesis Astralis as they cruised to victory.
Previously at ESL One: Cologne 2018, EliGE and Liquid finished in last place out of sixteen entrants and that would be his worst placing until this year's edition when he placed last out of twenty-four total entrants.
For Complexity, they have a lot of questions to answer as the organization has not started out their new season with the victories they thought they would get after acquiring a marquee fragger in EliGE.
