Day 1 of CyberPowerPC EGS Winter complete
Cloud9 vs Torqued (2-0)
The two first met on Cobblestone, Cloud9's pick. After picking up the pistol and both eco rounds, Torqued responded with three of their own once they pulled together a full buy. After recovering, Cloud9 was able to win out the half 11-4 with a significant lead. Once on their defensive side, Torqued quickly closed the round gap by taking 8 of the first 10 rounds of the second half. Despite their respectable efforts Cloud 9 was able to close out the remaining three rounds they needed to secure the map 16-12.
Inferno began with Cloud9 again taking a commanding four round lead, but not without struggle. Torqued's well-prepared executes were the reason they were able to get six bomb plants in the half, only to be overshadowed by their inability to close out rounds. Unable to string anything together, they were never able to destabilize the CT economy, leading to a 10-5 scoreline for Cloud9 at the half. Going into their T-side with confident aggression, C9 took an early lead that they ultimately carried to match point 16-9, eliminating Torqued from the event.
SoaR vs Ghost (2-0)
The series between SoaR and Ghost was closer than the end result would make it seem. Kicking things off on Train, Ghost tore through SoaR's defense by taking the first six consecutive rounds before the CT's could recover properly. After their streak, Ghost could only scrape together a scattered three additional rounds before the half ended 9-6 in their favor. SoaR responded in kind with an aggressive T-offense of their own by claiming the first 4 rounds of the second half. The remainder of the map Ghost could never close out their winning rounds cleanly, which left their economy in shambles. Despite a solid effort to cling to life and being at 3 map points, SoaR ran it back and took the game to overtime and secured the map 19-17.
Going into Nuke, Ghost took another commanding 5 round lead. Only able to string two rounds together at a time, SoaR struggled to make an impact on their Terrorist side, ending the half 9-6 in favor of Ghost. The reason for their Nuke pick became apparent once SoaR took to their CT-side. Playing mostly a re-take style defense that they were comfortable with, Ghost was unable to hold any bomb sites they took, and were only able to accrue 2 rounds in the entirety of the second half. SoaR closed the map out 16-11, taking the series.
Splyce vs Gale Force (2-0)
The dominant MDL and CEVO titans Gale Force struggled greatly from start to finish in the first map in their series against Splyce. The collective experience of Splyce, coupled with Gale Force's inexperience against their opponent were critical factors in them only being able to claim two rounds in the first half. With an 11 round deficit and losing the second half pistol round, Gale Force was unable to run it back and Splyce closed out Cache 16-3.
Nuke was a much more balanced affair as it's so heavily CT favored. Nevertheless, Splyce started off strong, only dropping one round in the first six on their T-side. After Gale Force regained their composure, they went on a seven round streak before the half ended 8-7 in their favor. Splyce controlled the entirety of the second half on their CT-side, only giving up three rounds to the Argentinian squad. Taking the map 16-11 and the series 2-0, Splyce eliminated Gale Force to move onto the next round.
Unemployed for Christmas vs GX (2-1)
The two teams started their series on Cobblestone, where GX took an early four round lead on their CT-side. The remainder of the half was a series of three and four round trades between the two until the half ended 7-8 in favor of GX. Now on their T-side, GX again take an early lead before Unemployed for Christmas tightened their defense and won the second gun round. After restabilizing, the CT's brought it to match point but failed to close it out before GX took it to overtime. With Unemployed for Christmas only able to secure a single round in OT, GX took map one 19-16.
Inferno is where the pace of this series began to fall away from GX. Unemployed for Christmas' defense on their CT-side was virtually impenetrable. Aside from a few scattered rounds, they took decisive control of the map and ran away with it until they switched sides at the half with an 11-4 lead. Unable to put up any sense of a defense, Unemployed for Christmas won every round on their T-side until they closed it out 16-4.
The deciding map of the series would be held on Cache, where a similar fate fell upon GX. Unemployed for Christmas ran through the CT-defense without remorse. Only dropping two rounds the entire half, they took a decided lead 13-2 before switching sides. Claiming their first two rounds on their CT-side, Unemployed for Christmas sat at map and match point before what seemed like a possible comeback from GX began. Unfortunately, a 13 round deficit was too much to overcome, despite the six straight rounds they answered back with. Unemployed for Christmas closes out the map 16-8 and the series 2-1.
The semi-finals of the CyberPowerPC Extreme Gaming Series Winter 2017 will be played out later today with Cloud9 going up against SoaR (4PM EST), and Unemployed for Christmas taking on Splyce (6:30PM EST). The event will conclude with the grand finals, scheduled for 9PM EST.
