9z's impressive run in Europe comes to an end
In what was a constant back and forth battle, Cloud9 have walked away with an impressive 2-1 win over 9z. While 9z were unable to make a deep run in the playoffs, the team showcased great potential in this event, beating FURIA twice and nearly taking out Cloud9 in this series.
The match started out on 9z's pick of Mirage where the South Americans were able to establish a quick 9-6 lead at the half. However, the Russians were not to be kept quiet and stormed back off the back of Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov's 28 kills and 1.45 rating, taking the map 16-13.
With the Russians successfully taking their opponent's map pick, it seemed all the more likely that 9z's Cinderella run with newbie Lucas "nqz" Soares was going to come to an abrupt end. But just like the series went on Mirage, 9z immediately came running out of the gates and did not let up, finishing the first half with a 10-5 scoreline. After the sides switched, Cloud9 was on the more favored CT side, however, it was not enough as Franco "dgt" Garcia powered his squad to a 16-10 finish to send the game to Overpass.
On Overpass, Cloud9 finally decided to adopt the 9z method by starting off the half strong and claiming nine rounds on the defense. With 9z's backs against the wall, they mounted a comeback and eventually tied the score at 12-12. However, despite Maximiliano "max" Gonzalez's impressive performance on Overpass, they were unable to win out and fell to Cloud9 16-14 in the decider map.
With this loss, 9z finish the Roobet Cup in 5th-8th place while Cloud9 advance on to the semifinals, where they will play BIG on June 29th at 09:00AM.
