ECS Season 4 North America final week recap
The final days of games in the online portion of the ECS North American division are complete, and the teams going forward to LAN and downward to relegation are confirmed. Due to how short Week 7 was, we're merging that and Week 8 into this lovely recap for you all. Aren't we nice.
OpTic vs Ghost (Nuke 16-10, Inferno 16-4)
In what would be the final games OpTic played online this season, these games proved crucial for OpTic in their race to claim a spot in Cancun. Nuke was the closer game of the two, with Adam "friberg" Friberg and co. still managing to come out on top after a close first half. The second map was a different story, as OpTic quickly put the nails in Ghost's ECS coffin.
OpTic were schedule to play their last matches against Immortals, but the Brazilian squad were unable to field a roster, and all their previous results in the league were rendered null and void.
Renegades vs NRG (Mirage 10-16, Overpass 7-16)
With NRG's European imports there to help them along, it was Jacob "FugLy" Medina to take the lead in their first map to place one foot on Mexico's welcome mat. Overpass saw Cvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov come alive to do as much as he could to help his team secure seats on that flight. From then on, it was left to results elsewhere to confirm their fate.
Cloud9 vs Renegades (Cobblestone 16-12, Train 12-16)
The Australians were set to play the most this week, piling their hopes on a strong run of form against their final opponents. Cloud9 were set to be a potential banana skin on that plan, as they required both maps in this game to be sure of qualification. Although close, the likes of Will "RUSH" Wierzba and Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham proved to be too much on Cobblestone as Cloud9 secured their spot in the finals. Renegades got one final reprieve however, as the strength of Keith "NAF" Markovic and Justin "jks" Savage saw Renegades keep a slim chance of qualification alive at the end of the tie.
Cloud9 vs Liquid (Mirage 19-15, Cache 16-11)
Cloud9 was up again, but it was Liquid who were having all the attention. Liquid started the week outside of the playoff spots, but only needed a series win to secure their place in Mexico. Mirage saw Liquid state their intentions in the first half, but although they took themselves to match point, Skadoodle led the way for a Cloud9 comeback victory. Cache was more straightforward for Cloud9, as the all-American side saw their position at the top confirmed, with Timothy "autimatic" Ta firing on all cylinders with an exceptional 119.1 ADR.
Liquid vs Ghost (Cobblestone 16-9, Mirage 16-6)
With Ghost's fate already sealed after the OpTic result, their only role in this game was to play for pride and to prevent Liquid from securing a playoff spot. After the result against league leaders Cloud9 didn't go their way, a win against the team struggling at the bottom was their only hope. The first map saw Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken at his prime, helping his team secure the win before allowing Nick "nitr0" Canella to pick up the slack on Mirage, sending Liquid through to Cancun.
Renegades vs Luminosity (Train 16-10, Cache 14-16)
After Liquid's win, Renegades and NRG were unable to qualify for Cancun. The final team was set to be decided between the Brazilians of SK and Luminosity. Renegades opted to play the match with Swole Patrol's Samuel "SileNt" Portillo in the place of Noah "Nifty" Francis, who was celebrating his birthday. Even with that, Luminosity only managed to sneak a close win on Cache, with strong performances from Gustavo "yeL" Knittel and Marcelo "chelo" Cespedes.
After that result, here are the final standings at the end of the ECS Season Four North American League:
