Liquid come back against Renegades; FaZe overrun OpTic
Renegades began their IEM Oakland campaign by winning their Terrorist-side pistol, and an additional four rounds. Their streak was stopped by Josh "jmd64" Marzano with a nice AWP triple-kill, after which Renegades immediately returned to winning ways.
jdm64 would also be respondible for Liquid's next win, four rounds later, with another 3K. He and his team were again unable to follow a win with a win, but did finish out the half with three straight rounds, bringing the score to 10-5.
Liquid won their own Terrorist pistol, plus the next round, before being stopped by the defense of Liquid. Renegades would only be able to win isolated rounds until round 25, where they would three on a row to bring themselves to match point — including a round which was lost by Liquid due to lack of a bomb plant.
Liquid would not capitulated easily, and responded with a round win in which they refused to hunt down the surviving Renegades members. It all came to a head with Renegades leading 15-14, and Justin "jks" Savage in a 1v2 situation against two Liquid players. The Renegades stud was unable to convert the clutch, and the match went to overtime.
The first overtime half was a tight affair, but Liquid had clearly seized the momentum away from Renegades, taken the first half with a 2-1 advantage. An aggressive push from Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski gave Liquid a chance but also a scare on match point, but Renegades were able to recover and bring the score to 18-17. The brief reprieve would not last for Renegades, however, as they would surrender the next round and map to Team Liquid 19-17.
Liquid and Renegades will next face Gambit and G2, respectively — both of which are currently 0-1, after losses to OpTic and FaZe.
FaZe won their opening pistol on Overpass, and barely looked back. Aside from a quadruple-kill from Kevin "HS" Tarn to give OpTic their first round of the match, there was precious little to write home about for the European mixture.
With Scandinavian stars Håvard "rain" Nygaard and Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer leading the way, FaZe allowed OpTic a mere three rounds on their Counter Terrorist side. And afte winning the pistol, HS's side would see no further joy, with the match ending in a decisive 16-3 victory for FaZe.
OpTic are done for the day, finishing 1-1. FaZe will next play Liquid, and will be looking to go 3-0 in Group B.
