A Mythic-al nightmare for Torqued in the first day of the ESL One Cologne open qualifier
Day one of the ESL One Cologne 2018 open qualifier has concluded, with four teams currently remaining for the two spots on offer in the closed portion of the event. 60 teams began the bracket in it's first round.
The big names of the tournament came from the MDL and ESL Pro League, with Torqued, eUnited, Dignitas and compLexity all picking up first round byes in the qualifier. Outside of those, other notable names included the Gorilla Gang, F1-RACECAR-PEEK and the Entourage.
The majority of the qualifier went off without a hitch for the majority of the teams, although compLexity's second round opponent Armada had a criticism of the tournament seeding. Coming off of a 16-0 win in their first game, against a team seeded above them, they were sent straight into being demolished 16-2. Similarly, Squirtle Squad were also not seeded, having their run ended by eUnited in the third round after a 16-5 loss.
It wasn't until the third round when the first big name casualties were spotted. Mythic took down Main champions Bravado in a 16-2 fashion to end their chances on Dust 2, with F1-RACECAR-PEEK spilling blood by taking down Anthony "vanity" Malaspina and the Gorilla Gang.
The tournament's first major shock came in the final round of the day, where Mythic destroyed Torqued 16-3, who looked extremely lost on Train. F1's journey in the tournament was then ended by recently relegated Dignitas, in a close 16-14 battle. compLexity secured their semifinal match against the Entourage, a 16-3 win on Inferno, with eUnited confirmed their spot through a battle against the Brazilians of oNe on Nuke, 16-9.
This leaves the final games of the open qualifier set to take place this evening, with the two MDL teams taking on each other, and the two ESL Pro League sides set to face off in the best-of-three games. The matches are:
The winners of these games will meet four as-yet unnanounced teams in the closed qualifier on May 24th-25th, with all of the teams fighting for one single spot in Germany.
