So close, yet so far

M80 fall short of playoffs after valiant rematch versus G2

M80 pushed NiKo and co. to their limit in Malta.

It was an incredible upset over G2 to begin the weekend, but it was tough to finish them off in the rematch on Sunday. Even if the final result is not what they wanted, M80 can hang their heads high knowing that they were able to defeat one of the top teams in the region and having a strong showing at ESL Pro League.

Ancient was a tough match for M80 as they did not show the same level of dominance as they did in their first matchup. It was a back and forth first half as each squad split the series equally. With a 6-6- half, the second half CT-side looked like M80 would be able to come away with their own map pick, however G2 surged ahead to an 11-9 lead. M80 pulled out a crucial few rounds to take it to overtime where the two sides went back and forth before G2 closed it out 22-20 in the narrowest of circumstances.

Inferno was a tougher map for the North Americans, however they found themselves down 3-6, but were able to tie up 6-6 at the half. While the momentum was in their favor, G2 turned the tide and blanked M80 on their CT-side and pulled out a much more convincing 13-6 win, compared to the same matchup a few days ago.

M80, despite losing out on playoffs, will have a lot to be proud of in their LAN debut with Elias "s1n" Stein as they head home.

Since M80 only had two weeks with S1n, I'd say this was an impressive performance. Let them rest up and give them some time to cook. Liquids will have to try harder to stay 2nd best NA and potentially Complexity might not be the permanent top of NA anymore. Overall very healthy for NA to have 3 teams that show great potential. I just wish more orgs would mix up the talent and stop recycling career tier 2 NA players.

This has been an absolutely amazing tournament to watch! Especially M80's matches. I am so proud of them and I am so excited for the future of NA CS.
