Ze Pug Godz claim back-to-back Mythic Summer Cup victories with win over Levitate
The second Mythic Summer Cup has concluded, with Ze Pug Godz winning their second cup in a row following a finals victory over Levitate.
Of the four opening matchups, New England Whalers versus Yeah was the closest, as New England Whalers narrowly won Train 16-14 before sending Yeah packing after a triple-overtime 25-21 victory on Nuke. The rest of the matches saw the favorites advance as Ze Pug Godz demolished RBG, Triumph bested Swedish Canadians, and New England Whalers claimed a labored 2-0 over oNe, with both maps going to double digits.
After four straight 2-0 victories in the quarterfinals, the semifinals turned out to be back-and-forth slogs on both sides of the bracket as Triumph faced off against Levitate while Ze Pug Godz took on New England Whalers. With Erik "penny" Penny playing in place of Rahul "curry" Nemani, Triumph seemed as strong as ever at the start of the series, taking down Levitate 16-4 on Mirage. Triumph's good form continued into Overpass with an 11-4 T-side that seemingly set the stage for Triumph to make another finals appearance. However, once Triumph transitioned onto their CT-side, their dominant form seemingly vanished as Levitate turned the tables, putting up an equally strong T-side to take Overpass 16-14 and force the series onto Nuke.
With the series tied up, Triumph started Nuke off with a strong T-side, once again putting Levitate's backs against the wall with a 10-5 half. However, in a collapse reminiscent of Overpass, Triumph's CT-side fell flat, allowing Levitate to claw their way back into the map, finding their way into the finals with a 16-13 victory.
The second semifinals series ended up being a three-map rematch for Ze Pug Godz and New England Whalers, with Ze Pug Godz starting the series in the lead this time as they narrowly won their map pick of Train 16-12. Down a map, New England Whalers answered back thanks to a strong performance from Jonathan "djay" Dallal, holding firm to win Dust2 16-10. With the series tied up, New England Whalers looked keen to notch an upset win over Ze Pug Godz as they won their CT-side 9-6 before finding map point first. With their tournament life on the line, Ze Pug Godz managed to hang on, with a 1v2 clutch by Gage "Infinite" Green sending Nuke into overtime. In overtime, New England Whalers kept the pressure up and were the first to find 18 rounds before Ze Pug Godz forced a second overtime and claimed Nuke 22-19.
After incredibly close semi-final series, the finals turned out to be a one-sided affair for Ze Pug Godz. The series started off with Ze Pug Godz dominating Levitate on their map pick, winning their CT-side 13-2 before winning the map 16-8. On Train, Levitate began to show signs of life as they narrowly won their CT-side 8-7 before being stopped dead in their tracks as Ze Pug Godz mounted a 9-2 CT-side to win the map 16-10.
