PGL reveals RMR invites
PGL announced the list of teams invited to attend the Regional Major Ranking tournament leading up to the 2024 PGL Copenhagen Major being held later this March. The Americas region will see only one of its teams head directly to the RMR for the third year in a row as FURIA reached the Top 16 at the 2023 BLAST.tv Paris Major.
Liquid also technically received an invite to the RMR, however that was only for the core roster of Josh "oSee" Ohm, Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis, and Keith "NAF" Markovic. However, due to oSee's departure to NRG earlier this year, the core collapsed and would not be able to retain an invite. Liquid will be participating in the 2024 PGL Copenhagen Americas RMR North American Open Qualifiers when they begin this January.
Speaking of the Americas RMR, there will only be seven spots up for grabs for the North American teams this year. Valve's rule on the subset of regions for Americas provides a clear explanation.
If a region must be subdivided to accommodate ping of participating teams (e.g., AMER -> NA and SA), RMR invitations will be split evenly among the regions. If invitations cannot be evenly split, the remaining invitation(s) will be granted to the subdivided qualifier featuring the team with the highest Regional Standing.
In the final ranking from December 18th, FURIA was atop the regional ranking with 1580 points while Complexity had 1526. This leads to South America earning eight spots at the RMR, alongside FURIA, while North America only earns seven.
As for the closed qualifier, North America will see Complexity, M80, Nouns, Evil Geniuses, Badass, BOSS, Party Astronauts, and Unjustified skipping the tumultuous open qualifiers. Teams like NRG, Wildcard, MIGHT, and Take Flyte will have to go through those qualifiers if they hope to make it to the final sixteen.
The first matches of the 2024 PGL Copenhagen Major begin January 8th with Dust2.us providing around-the-clock coverage and a live stream for each round of games.
