T.c: "I wouldn't even give us a 3/10"
After dropping out of the BLAST.tv Paris Major with a dismal 2-0 loss to Liquid, who are having their own issues, Ryan Friend spoke to Complexity's coach, Tiaan "T.c" Coertzen, to discuss what went so wrong in this tournament and how Complexity work to come back ahead of IEM Dallas.
Please note that the full interview can be found below on YouTube, while the transcript has some key snippets from their conversation.
What happened in that 0-2 loss to Liquid?
In the match today, to be honest, and from the start of the event, it didn't feel like we were playing at a Major. The energy, the comms, the flowing of ideas in the camp was nowhere on it. On Anubis it took us about ten rounds to get into it and then it started flowing a little bit better, there were ideas and people started speaking again.
On Overpass, honestly we were getting shut out completely and it didn't even feel like we were playing at a Major. It felt like we were just chilling at home playing. The energy levels were nowhere near where we need them to be to actually play to our level.
Saying this as gently as possible, but if you didn't come back in the second half of Anubis this was probably one of Complexity's most embarrassing losses. Is it really just the energy, or what happened against a Liquid that has performed poorly at this Major?
Our preparation is always good but at the end of the day when we are not playing up to our standards and doing all the basics right, communicating what we need to do, saying when we're going for plays, making sure your teammates are ready to react, making sure our spacing is good, the preparation doesn't matter.
The preparation is there as an extra help to get you over the edge to get wins, but when we're not even communicating the basics and people are shocked you're in a position when you communicate with them, then when those basics weren't there the preparation doesn't matter.
To go 1-3, with two of your losses being against regional opponents, is that something you're going to prioritize getting back to winning those matchups?
I think we fare a lot better against the European opposition. All the NA teams are just practicing in Europe and historically we've always done better against European opposition. At the end of the day though, we need to be able to win these regional matchups because in a lot of qualifiers... it is teams that we know from the past but to be honest when we're not playing up to our level and when we're playing this way, we're going to lose to anybody not just the regional matchups.
How would you rate the team's performance at the Major?
Poorly, at the worst that we've played since the start of the year when we had the same embarrassing loss to Liquid at the BLAST groups and then we ended up pulling it back and having a good run at Katowice. I wouldn't even give us a 3/10, we didn't even showcase 30% of what we know we can do and how we know we can play.
It's a very disappointing tournament and never even felt like we got going. Even in the GamerLegion win, it felt slow.
