SK falls to North in Group A winner's match
With DreamHack experimenting with new group stage formats, Malmo’s variation on the GSL system utilizes best of 3 winner’s matches and best of 1 loser’s matches, contrary to what many had previously been used to. SK met the new North lineup in the winner’s match after topping B.O.O.T-dream[S]cape yesterday, and went in as the favorites.
The series began on North’s pick of Cobblestone. This has historically been one of North’s best maps, but SK has never been a slouch on it either. SK racked up a humungous 12-3 first half from the Terrorist side, and despite Kristian “k0nfig” Wienecke’s best efforts, the Brazilian side finished off the first map 16-5.
However, on SK’s pick Train, Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s men couldn’t get their CT side rolling until late in the second half, only garnering 7 rounds. Again, k0nfig as well as Philip “aizy” Aistrup, locked down North’s CT side to finish up the map 16-8.
This loss seemed to get to the SK side, as they only managed to win 2 rounds in the first half of the deciding map Inferno. João “felps” Vasconcellos put in a comeback-worthy effort, but it was not enough as North finally managed to close out the map 16-11.
This series marks the first time that North has bested SK in a best of 3, and both gives much hope to the Valdemar “valde” Bjørn Vangså infused North, as well as raises concerns of SK’s grasp on the #1 spot.
The decider match versus Cloud9 will take place tomorrow morning on the DreamHack Twitch channel.
