Liquid, Renegades advance to 2-0 pool; compLexity and NRG face elimination in Katowice
The second round of the IEM Katowice New Legends stage matches have concluded, seeing Liquid and Renegades advance into the 2-0 pool. compLexity and NRG were unable to post wins in either of their matches today, resulting in them being drawn against each other in the 0-2 elimination round tomorrow.
MIBR and compLexity were the first North Americans teams to face off in round two, with the two teams looking to make up for flat performances against Cloud9 and Astralis, respectively, in the first round. After MIBR took the opening pistol round, compLexity answered back with three rounds of their own to claim an early lead over the Brazilian side. As the first half of Mirage continued, the two teams took turns trading rounds, with compLexity claiming a narrow 8-7 lead at the end of the half.
As MIBR's T-side began, compLexity's hopes of upsetting their Brazilian opposition were quickly dashed as MIBR launched into a 4-round run to set the score at 11-8. After this, compLexity were able to muster a single round on their CT side, however it was too little too late as MIBR closed out the game after this with five rounds in a row. Being thrown into a surprisingly strong 0-2 pool, compLexity's tournament life is now on the line as they are pegged to face off against NRG tomorrow, guaranteeing that one North American team will be sent home.
The next match to conclude was between NRG and AVANGAR, with AVANGAR edging out a 16-13 map win. The Kazakhstani side put up an immense 11-4 CT side half to kick off the map. NRG attempted a comeback on their own CT side, taking the second half pistol round before dealing two economic resets against AVANGAR to close the deficit, eventually tying up the match 13-13.
Despite Ethan "Ethan" Arnold and Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte's best efforts, NRG fell at the final hurdle, with AVANGAR winning three rounds straight to finally close out the map 16-13 and send NRG down to the 0-2 pool.
Renegades were able to surprise FaZe in their Inferno matchup, resetting the Europeans after they won the first pistol round to go up 3-1 at the start of the map. However, a stellar defense from FaZe once their economy stabilized granted Renegades little room to crack open bombsites, with the Australian side managing just three more rounds in the half as FaZe worked their way up to a 9-6 halftime scoreline.
Another pistol round victory went the way of FaZe, but yet again Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács and company found themselves pushed back as Renegades won the ensuing round to take control. Aaron "AZR" Ward helped his team to steal away the lead with a six-round streak before once again resetting FaZe after the Europeans got back on the board, allowing for an additional trio of rounds to attain match point. FaZe attempted to push the map to overtime with three rounds of their own, but Renegades prevailed in the 30th round to advance to the 2-0 pool yet again, repeating their performance from the New Challengers stage.
Astralis made short work of Cloud9 on Train, completely locking the American-European mix out of the map to add a second Major 16-0 victory to their belt. Cloud9 only managed a total of 25 frags as a team, while Emil "Magisk" Reif put up a 21-5 K-D and averaged 137 damage per round to help Astralis on their road to victory.
The final matchup to conclude was between Liquid and NiP on Overpass, with Liquid starting off on the CT side by putting up five unanswered rounds. NiP answered back with two of their own, but Nick "nitr0" Cannella fought back by grabbing an ace LIquid, winning a 1vs2 at the end of the round to help his team extend their lead to 8-2. The final four rounds of the half were a brawl between the two sides, with Liquid grabbing just a single round for a 9-6 lead as they swapped to their T side.
This time it was NiP who got off to a hot start, winning five rounds of their own at the start of the second half to steal away the lead from Liquid. Once their economy stabilized, Liquid managed to rally back for a trio of rounds of their own, aided by a four-kill round by nitr0. NiP snatched away another two rounds to once again regain the lead at 13-12, but nitr0 refused to let the game slip away as he grabbed another four kills to put Liquid back in control, allowing for his team to win four final rounds to edge out a map win 16-13.
