Cloud9 crumble under the weight of Gambit in Marseille quarterfinal
The last remaining North American team at DreamHack Marseille has been eliminated, as Cloud9 got put through the ringer by Gambit in their quarterfinal series 2-0. The CIS titans now advance to the semifinals where they will face-off against Na'Vi tomorrow.
The quarterfinal series began on Mirage, a favorite of Cloud9. Gambit controlled the majority of the first half, claiming the pistol and subsequent two rounds that followed to kick things off. The North Americans managed to string together three of their own after winning the first full-buy round, but were quickly silenced by the CIS squad as they all but won out the half 11-4.
Once on their T-side, Gambit repeated their pistol round success, claiming the first three rounds of the half yet again. With their backs against the wall and in a significant round deficit, Cloud9's resiliency finally emerged, allowing them to grind out nine consecutive rounds while Gambit sat on map-point, taking Mirage to overtime. While Cloud9 managed to stand their ground in the first overtime, they flopped in the second 0-4, putting Gambit on a one map advantage in the series.
After a neck-and-neck map one, Gambit began Train by shutting down any and all attempts by Cloud9 to gain any momentum. The CIS team quickly racked up eleven rounds in the first half, with Cloud9 struggling until the end to gather the sparse four that they eventually managed.
Gambit went on to take the first four rounds of their T-side, putting them on map and series point early in the half. Despite their efforts to cling to life, Cloud9 would eventually fall in a stark 7-16 to Gambit.
Cloud9 performed unexpectedly well at their first LAN event in spite of a new roster addition, upsetting the likes of FaZe in a Bo3 along the way. The team now looks forward catching up on their ESL Pro League seasonal matches, as well as preparing for IEM Sydney, which begins on May 1st.
