Complexity faces another test

What to expect from Complexity v. FaZe

NA's hottest start at a tournament in years, but what can be made from it?

After an up and down group stage showing, Complexity made the most of their last chance to reach the playoffs of ESL Pro League Season 20, defeating MOUZ in 2-0 fashion again to qualify along with Liquid and Group C winners M80. With the goal of qualification behind them, Complexity now faces towards more stiff EU competition by way of FaZe Clan in the round of 16.

Complexity's group effort

The supporting cast have been the difference makers for Complexity this event. Both Michael "Grim" Wince and Ricky "floppy" Kemery stepped up in their rematch series wins versus Astralis and MOUZ, taking the load off of Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski. Håkon "hallzerk" Fjærli has also been sensational on the AWP for most of the group stage, while Johnny "JT" Theodosiou continues to prove that he's one of the best fragging IGLs at the tournament.

  • Consistent play and big moments from the whole team

  • Not reliant on a big EliGE game to win

  • Clutch factor: 3-0 in overtime maps

FaZe rallies after early falter

FaZe Clan's run at ESL Pro League Season 20 started in an inauspicious manner, losing to Sangal Esports after getting blown out on Anubis, 13-2. But after that first loss, FaZe regained control with a 2-0 win over FlyQuest, a win against NIP that was punctuated by a 13-1 stomp on Dust2, and a clean 2-0 win in a rematch versus Sangal. After that loss on Anubis, David "frozen" Čerňanský has been locked in, with the typically reliable Håvard "rain" Nygaard and Robin "ropz" Kool providing steady contributions.

  • Proven, star-studded roster

  • Return to form for ropz

  • On a hot streak

  • Consistently beats Complexity

Previous Matchups

The current iterations of FaZe and Complexity faced off at the PGL Copenhagen Major this year, with FaZe taking the series 2-0 via 13-6 wins on Overpass and Nuke.

Likely Vetoes

  • Complexity ban Mirage (Permaban)

  • FaZe ban Vertigo (Permaban, and also Complexity's stronghold)

  • Complexity pick Anubis (Complexity's most played map other than Vertigo, and a weak map for FaZe)

  • FaZe pick Dust2 (5-1 in last six played)

  • Complexity ban Ancient

  • FaZe ban Nuke

  • Decider is Inferno

Complexity are definitely punching above their weight class versus FaZe, and will almost certainly not have their go-to map of Vertigo available. Still, if the veto shakes out this way, they can play Anubis where FaZe previously got blown out, and potentially make it to Inferno where FaZe has not played this event.
