Take Flyte potentially use illegal substitution in Americas RMR CQ

The organization might have accidentally screwed up.

Take Flyte has not had the easiest time so far in the 2024 Perfect World Shanghai Major Americas RMR North American Closed Qualifier. They forfeited their first match and then had to include coach Frankie "Champ" Miranda in their past two matches. However, it is that inclusion that might be causing some problems.

In last night's contest against LAG, Take Flyte subbed in their coach Champ for Kevin "Grave" Le. This is allowed under the Valve rulebook, but the team has seemingly run afoul of the rules with their roster moves changes in today's match versus Legacy.

While Champ played last night in place of Grave, he appeared today in the opening map of the match against Legacy in place of Caleb "jchancE" Davis. Grave's return to the lineup in tonight's contest reset the roster back to its core lineup, which used up the single substitution that Valve allows for teams competing in the Major cycle.

With Champ then playing in place of jchancE today, it acts as a second substitution which is violation of the rules. Furthermore, with jchancE then returning to the lineup and participating in Map 2 of the match against Legacy, they are now violating the rule which prevents mid-match substitutions, unless it's in the case of a medical emergency. Dust2.us has reached out to a representative of Take Flyte to ask about this situation, but we have not heard back by the time of publication.

The official Valve Major Supplemental Rulebook states the following for substitutions:

Fact box

Substitutions

Each team can substitute a player with their registered substitute once during the event.

  • A team may make a substitution in-between matches for any reason.

  • A team may make a substitution during a match or in-between maps only in the case of a medical emergency.

  • Once a substitution has been made, the team can continue to play with the substitute player until they choose to revert to their Core Lineup.

  • The substitution rules above apply if a team chooses to revert to their Core Lineup.

  • Once the team reverts to the Core Lineup, it may not substitute again for any reason and must play shorthanded or forfeit if the situation arises.

From what Dust2.us can gather, Take Flyte was clear to use Champ in place of Grave for the match against LAG last night. However, the team seems to have run afoul of the rules as they used their coach for jchancE in Map 1 of the match against Legacy this afternoon. Furthermore, Take Flyte should not have been allowed to bring in jchancE for Champ in the middle of the match and let him start on Map 2.

When asked why jchancE loaded into the server for Map 2, Take Flyte provided the following statement;

Just really bad timing unfortunately for his work schedules. Caleb pretty much has to rush home immediately after his shift, but traffic has been rough both days (and then Grave had flight delays yesterday). His job hasn't given him any leniency, so kinda gotta deal with this or he may get fired, which none of us want, as shitty as it is to deal with atm

Dust2.us has been unable to find a representative of Perfect World to comment on the matter so far.
