oNe secure ESL Challenger Anaheim 2022 Closed Qualifier spot over Bad News Bears
oNe has come out victorious on the second day of the first open qualifier for ESL Challenger Anaheim 2022, triumphing over the two other heavyweight sides of Party Astronauts and Bad News Bears in the process.
oNe kicked off day two of their open qualifier campaign with a swift victory over Eros, spearheaded by an astounding 1.97 rating from Matheus "pesadelo" Panisset. Elsewhere in the quarterfinals, Strife beat out Detonate despite a strong showing from Christopher "Swahn" Swahn. Bad News Bears and Party Astronauts achieved convincing victories over their opponents ONET4P and Springroll, respectively.
The first semifinal of the qualifier saw oNe face off against Party Astronauts on Inferno. Party Astronauts looked to be in the driver's seat for the first half, managing a respectable 9-6 scoreline on their Terrorist side. This lead wouldn't last, however, as an impressive 2.02 Terrorist side rating from Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa would put the Astronauts to shame, with oNe taking ten of the eleven rounds played in the second half, locking in their grand final spot.
On the opposite side of the bracket, Bad News Bears matched up against Strife on Nuke for the other grand final spot. Brendan "Bwills" Williams and Michael "Swisher" Schmid posted strong numbers on the Bears' Counter-Terrorist side to fashion a dominant 12-3 lead. The second half would be far more back and forth, but with such a large lead already secured for the Bears, there was little Strife could do as Bad News Bears finished off the map with a 16-9 scoreline.
oNe came into the grand final with a shadow looming over them, as their record against Bad News Bears in the past two months had been markedly poor, with no victories over them in BO3s during that timeframe. Despite these matchups generally being close affairs, since the addition of Bwills to Bad News Bears, the Brazilians have been unable to come out on top.
The series kicked off on oNe's pick of Inferno, with the beginning of the first half seeing many rounds traded back and forth between the two sides. Eventually, Bad News Bears would find their composure, and thanks to a 2.02 Counter-Terrorist rating from IGL Alan "Shakezullah" Hardeman, the Bears would carve out a 9-6 lead for themselves. oNe got off to a flying start on their Counter-Terrorist side, stringing the first six rounds of the half together to take the lead. But, Bad News Bears weren't shaken by this, and they managed to pull their Terrorist side together, trading rounds back and forth until the game was taken into overtime. In overtime, oNe displayed the flashes of brilliance they had at the beginning of their Counter-Terrorist half, and the Brazilian side finally finished off their pick with a 19-16 scoreline.
Bad News Bears built a strong start for themselves on their map pick of Ancient, taking the first five rounds of their Terrorist side. oNe pieced together two rounds of their own before Bad News Bears answered back with an additional two rounds. At a scoreline of 7-2, the half began to stall out for Bad News Bears, as oNe took five of the remaining six rounds to tighten up the half 8-7. oNe snagged the second pistol round and the next three rounds on top of it to take the lead. The Bears were not deterred, as they took five rounds of their own to keep themselves in the game. A series of close rounds ensued, including a 1v2 for pesadelo, and in the end, oNe would be victorious, taking the map 16-14, earning themselves a Closed Qualifier spot for ESL Challenger Anaheim 2022.
The Closed Qualifier for ESL Challenger Anaheim 2022 will feature three more teams, with two being directly invited and one coming through the second open qualifier, which starts later today.
