Americas RMR to have six spots for Shanghai
Eighteen months and two Majors later, the Americas is finally back to six teams advancing from the Americas RMR to the next Major. The region was originally given six spots for the 2021 PGL Stockholm Major before losing one spot at the 2022 IEM Rio Major as four Americas teams failed to qualify to the next stage.
In that period, the new format for the Americas RMR became much more complicated as only five teams were supposed to advance from a sixteen-team Swiss system. As was seen much more in the last edition of the RMR, the seeding with only five qualifying teams becomes askew as not all matches are played out. With teams eliminated after two losses, all 1-2 and 2-2 games do not happen which disproportionately affects seeding.
Now, with six spots available, teams in the next Americas RMR will be able to incur two losses without being eliminated. This will allow for greater opportunity to all teams to readjust and potentially qualify for the upcoming 2024 Perfect World Shanghai Major.
Fans will now be watching FURIA playing SAW as they hope to see the Brazilian squad give the Americas a potential seven spots for the upcoming Shanghai Major. This would tie the record for the number of teams from the region to attend an event. MLG Columbus 2016 had seven teams attend the event, including the offline qualifier.
