Americas would retain five spots for Copenhagen Major thanks to Liquid moves
It's no secret that North American fans have had the most exciting last seven days in a long while. First, Complexity made a miraculous run to the IEM Sydney Grand Final, where they were inches away from giving NA its first major title since 2019. Then, Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken's FaZe won the event, cementing him as the first player to repeat as a winner of IEM Sydney.
Following all that, Dust2.us reported that Liquid would be completely overhauling their roster by bringing in Twistzz, Felipe "skullz" Medeiros, and Casper "cadiaN" Møller. This shook up the whole Counter-Strike world, as fans certainly did not expect the organization to make such aggressive moves.
However, amid everything, Liquid also decided that Josh "oSee" Ohm would be allowed to explore his options outside of the squad. His departure from the starting lineup changes how Liquid can play in the 2024 PGL Copenhagen Major cycle. It was oSee, Keith "NAF" Markovic, and Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis that was the remaining core from the 2023 BLAST.tv Paris Major, which guaranteed that the Americas would still retain their one Legends placing in the Major.
With the core now breaking up, Liquid having previously entertained a European core and potentially moving the spot to the Old World, there were questions about where the location of the spot would end up. Valve told Dust2.us that the Americas region would retain the Legends spot with Liquid's core no longer remaining together. Even if Liquid ends up with a European-based team, so long as they do not retain oSee, NAF, and YEKINDAR together, the spot will go to the Americas.
However, there is the hypothetical chance that Liquid could get creative in their attempts to retain the spot while playing in Europe. While Nick "nitr0" Cannella is off the team, the organization could potentially register him as a member of the starting lineup alongside NAF and YEKINDAR, then sub him out immediately before the first game. This would allow Liquid to retain their invite.
Liquid, with Twistzz, NAF, and skullz in their lineup, would also attempt to qualify through the Americas region for the 2024 PGL Copenhagen Major. Overall, the Americas will return to having five spots at the 2024 PGL Copenhagen Major with one allocated Legends spot. However, we'll have to wait to see if this all comes true, as none of Liquid's moves have been finalized.
