New Valve Ranking update keeps 9z at top of Americas leaderboard
Last December, Valve announced they had created a new ranking to help determine the top teams of each region. This ranking is based on three factors; prize money earned, beaten opponents' prize money earned and teams beaten, and head-to-head results. The full formula is available on the GitHub page.
With Valve deciding all tournaments must use either open qualifiers or their ranking starting in 2025, all eyes are now on their standings and model to see if it's up to snuff with community expectations. Yesterday, Valve updated the model once more, adding in recent results as well as fiddling with their model to introduce a LAN component and increase the time penalty for games played longer ago.
With those changes being made, we still see a multitude of issues with the ranking, specifically in the combined Americas region. For starters, 9z remains the highest-ranked team in the region. Complexity is behind M80, Evil Geniuses, Wildcard, Forsaken, and Nouns in 19th place, and FURIA sits four places behind their own academy project.
Since we don't expect to see these rankings used until the Copenhagen Major RMR Closed Qualifiers, there are still many months for Valve to adjust the rankings as they see fit.
Below are the top ten teams in the current Americas Ranking:
#1. 9z - 752 Points
#2. Sharks - 725 Points
#3. 00Nation - 714 Points
#4 MIBR - 693 Points
#5. M80 - 688 Points
#6. Bestia - 687 Points
#7. Paquetá - 678 Points
#8. Imperial - 676 Points
#9. Evil Geniuses - 663 Points
#10. Wildcard - 662 Points
