EliGE was an integral piece to Complexity's win over NIP

Complexity win vs NIP; what went right?

EliGE is back baby, that's what!

Yesterday's Complexity surprised a lot of people, coming out swinging versus the majority-Swedish Ninjas in Pyjamas. Not only did they have a strong performance on the first map despite a 16-14 loss, they reverse-swept the competition, taking down NIP on both their map pick and the decider map.

k0nfig was NIP's only positive rating

Across the different maps of the series, NIP's players were able to post ratings above 1.00, however, when averaged out for the whole series, only Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke was able to post a high rating. His 1.33 performance on Inferno was a key reason as to why Complexity had to take it to three maps to close out the series. Despite an even higher 1.46 rating on Nuke for the Dane, Complexity were too dominant and his performance alone was not enough for the Ninjas.

EliGE kept getting better and better

Jumping into his first map for the team, Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski was already topping the board of Complexity with a 1.15 rating; that was just the beginning however. Inferno was just the warmup for the American star as he only improved as the series went on. A 1.42 rating on Nuke and a 1.50 rating on Overpass saw Complexity sweep NIP off their feet, an especially important performance considering Håkon "hallzerk" Fjærli's unfortunate 0.93 rating in the series.

Of course, EliGE is not the sole reason for Complexity's success. Michael "Grim" Wince's also showed a triumphant return after he had been on a downturn since February, even picking up the AWP for a key round on Inferno. Every else stepping up in their roles and ensuring the whole team was working well and integrating EliGE well into their structure was also key in their debut win.

The series in review

Obviously, this was just one match and NIP aren't the strongest opponent that Complexity could have faced, being ranked only 13th in the world currently. This match is slightly reminiscent of the Evil Geniuses win versus Heroic in their opening match at the Spring Groups earlier this year. Their BO3 upset over the #1 team in the world at the time caught everyone off guard, but then they slumped right back into their usual performance level.

Hopefully, this is not what we're seeing here with Complexity and this is just the start of something great for the team and North American Counter-Strike. With all three maps being quite close and EliGE's standout performance being critical to their win, it is important that Complexity do not get complacent as consistency is much more important for a good tournament performance.

Key stats of the series

  • Complexity let Inferno slip out of their grasp; NIP won three semi-buy/eco rounds that allowed them to pull through on map one

  • Despite an unfortunate series rating, hallzerk pulled ahead of headtr1ck in total AWP kills, with 24 for the Norwegian versus his opponent's 18

  • Complexity had no issues cracking open NIP, securing 58.6% of the series' total first kills

What's next for our NA stars?

Complexity will be facing the #2 team in the world, Vitality, next in the Group A upper bracket final. Should our stars shine brighter than ever, then they'll move on to the Group A final. The match is scheduled for tomorrow at 09:00AM.
