Grim on FaNg's form: "When he's feeling it he can kill anyone"
Complexity have been on a general upwards trajectory since they revamped their roster with Norwegian AWPer Håkon "hallzerk" Fjærli. However, they hit a major stumbling block in their progression when they failed to qualify for IEM Rio. Complexity attended the first ever CS:GO Major and they will attend the last as they went 3-1 to qualify, a run that included getting revenge on Imperial who knocked them out at the Rio RMR.
After securing their qualification with a victory over MIBR, Michael "Grim" Wince talked to Dust.us' Daniel "Scoobster" Khurgin about the match, Justin "FaNg" Coakley's RMR form and the teams performance at the event.
Alright Grim tell me how does it feel to qualify for the Major, winning 3-1 how does that feel?
It feels really good, especially after Rio where we came so close. We had a good start to the Rio qualifier too, we fell through it was really sad for everyone I was crying after the match. This time around no sad tears, but I was really glad we could pull through and we know we can beat any of these teams here. I'm glad we came and prepped, MIBR are not easy they are a very good opponent and we showed that we dominated on Inferno basically. I'm just really happy for the team.
Yeah so on that Inferno that was their pick and you destroyed them, what do you think contributed to that victory?
I would say right now it's just my confidence, I have been in a bit of a slump recently I have been trying to get out of it. But after the Imperial game on Nuke I was playing pretty good and I was just going to transfer that confidence into the Inferno game. We were actually surprised they picked Inferno because that's a map we are confident on and had a ton of good results on a few months ago at Katowice. It's one of our better maps so we just went in there confident, had a good gameplan and stuck to it and pulled through in the end.
Also, FaNg has been having a tough couple of months recently but he really showed up today in spades. How did it feel seeing the multi-kills and all the impact he was having?
It was really nice because Justin is one of our star riflers his aim is insane. When he's feeling it he can kill anyone. So it's really nice seeing him get multi-kills and when he is doing that; it makes everyone else's job easier. It's just nice all the individuals were on point today and I couldn't be more proud of how we played.
Speaking about another individual, hallzerk, he wasn't present for the showdown but he was here today. You were sitting next to him. Missing him earlier and now sitting next to him on LAN how does that feel?
It always feels good to sit next to hallzerk on LAN, he's a funny amazing guy. For the Showdown it really sucked he was playing on like 150 ping and he was also really sick, you could tell in his voice he could barely talk. Honestly, for the Showdown we had no expectations we were just playing and trying our best but we were not expecting to win too much just because of the circumstances. We tried our best but ultimately fell through, Imperial are a really good team as well. It's really nice to have him back and healthy so yeah.
Last one, after falling to paiN and going 1-1 and having to face Imperial which is a historically tough matchup for you. At 1-1 what did you feel your chances of qualifying were?
We were still confident we could make it, we knew in the paiN game and even after the Team Solid game we were a bit sloppy and not playing our best. We had a talk after the game and said we had to step it up. The main thing for us was our trading was really down, we weren't playing with teammate's very good. In this game we really, and the game against Imperial, stepped it up and always made sure we had a teammate nearby and always could like support a teammate in a way with some type of crossfire play. I think that's what took us to the next level in these games.
Complexity join Liquid, paiN, FURIA and Fluxo in their qualification for the BLAST Paris Major which kicks off May 13th.
