WCA 2017 Finals postponed to next year
World Cyber Arena have announced that their world finals event, for which the qualification process began in mid-July, has been moved from the original dates of December 17-22 to an unspecified date next year.
The tournament organizer cited the proximity of Christmas, visa issues, and schedule conflicts with major events. It is likely that the referenced event is in fact ECS Season 4 Finals held in Cancun, Mexico, which is set to run from December 15-17.
Luminosity are the North American representatives for the event. The Brazilian team qualified after marching through the closed qualifier with 2-0 victories over Gale Force, compLexity and CLG. They will be joined by their South American brethren from Argentina, Isurus Gaming, who themselves triumphed over a trio of Brazilian teams in Merciless Gaming, Team One, and INTZ.
The currently known team list for the event is as follows:
Chiefs | B.O.O.T-d[S] |
Heroic | Gambit |
Next Generation | Valour |
Luminosity | Isurus |
There is also a nebulous event involving other teams from the "WCA Alliance" that will be taking place either previously to this main event, or concurrently. Information on that from World Cyber Arena has remained scarce.
When looking towards the 2018 tournament calendar, there are already a significant number of occupied weekends in the early months of the year between WESG events, the ELEAGUE Major Boston, IEM Katowice, and Copenhagen Games. World Cyber Arena have said that these scheduled events will be taken into consideration when the organization is deciding when to move their own event to.
